UofL engineering school honors alumni, industry

    LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville’s J.B. Speed School of Engineering is honoring several of its alumni and an industry with engineering awards during Homecoming Week.

    This year’s outstanding industry award goes to Messer Construction Co., an employee-owned commercial construction company with offices in Louisville and Lexington as well as throughout Tennessee, Ohio and Indiana. Messer projects at UofL include the Shumaker Research Building on Belknap Campus and the Clinical and Translational Research Building at the Health Sciences Center.

    Speed’s Alumni Fellow Award, one of 10 given at UofL, goes to Veloris “Sonny” Marshall, president and chief executive officer of Marshall Communications Corp., Ashburn, Va.

    Speed’s professional awards in engineering are given for outstanding engineering career performance, exceptional efforts to foster professional development of engineering students, remarkable ability to plan and direct significant projects in technical engineering and distinguished contributions to technical engineering knowledge. The 2010 professional awards go to:

    Chemical engineering — Kevin Krogman, co-founder and research and development director, Svaya Nanotechnologies Inc., Sunnyvale, Calif.

    Civil and environmental engineering — Saeed Assef, director of infrastructure and flood protection division, Louisville and Jefferson County Metropolitan Sewer District

    Computer engineering and computer science — Thomas Romano, KFC chief information officer, YUM! Brands Inc.

    Electrical and computer engineering — Stephen Hutti, program manager for tactical aircraft and weapons support-ground support equipment, Boeing, St. Louis

    Industrial engineering — Teresa Crawford, director of KFC engineering, YUM! Brands Inc.

    Mechanical engineering — Dean Terrell, vice president of engineering, Santa Rosa Systems Inc.

    The awards will be given at an Oct. 8 event at the Louisville Marriott Downtown.
