UofL puts student outcomes at the center of strategic priorities.

The University of Louisville is the highest-ranked Kentucky public university on the inaugural list of America’s Best Colleges by TIME.

For the 2026-27 list, universities were rated in three categories – student outcomes, learning environment and attractiveness. Only five Kentucky schools made the Top 500.

The TIME rankings, done in coordination with Statista, set out to highlight schools that provide the best value for undergraduate students and a good return on investment for their education.

“We have long known the incredible value of a UofL degree, but it is encouraging to see that value affirmed nationally,” said President Gerry Bradley. “While rankings are one measure of success, what matters most is that our students leave UofL prepared to build successful futures.”

Student outcomes carried the most weight in the rankings, and preparing students for life after graduation takes several forms at UofL. For example, the Center for Engaged Learning helps Cardinals get involved in opportunities like internships, co-ops and undergraduate research participation. Students can also find career coaching, exploration and support through university career centers and working with academic advisors.

UofL puts student outcomes at the center of strategic priorities, including a targeted focus on several of the elements that TIME highlights in its student outcome ratings such as expanding access for all learners and improving timely degree completion.

UofL was the highest scoring Kentucky public in the learning environment and attractiveness components, which measure the quality of the instructional setting and how much an institution is sought-after by prospective students.

The TIME rankings are just one list where UofL is leading the way in Kentucky. UofL is the only university in the commonwealth – and one of only 13 in the nation – to be classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a Research 1, Opportunity College and Community Engaged university. The Opportunity College designation also recognizes student outcomes and again UofL is rated for high access and high earnings.

“These rankings reflect our commitment to ensuring students not only have access to quality academics and groundbreaking research activity, but that they are well-prepared for their chosen career opportunities after graduation,” Bradley said. “Combined with our focus on serving our communities, Cardinals are making an impact on society wherever they land.”
