LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The producer and lead actress of an award-winning film about interfaith cooperation and resilience during the 1994 Rwandan genocide will attend a free, public screening of “Kinyarwanda” Oct. 2 at the University of Louisville.

Darren Dean and Rwandese actress Hadija Zaninka are among the crew members touring the U.S. Midwest and South to answer questions and show the film. The UofL screening with them will begin at 4:30 p.m. in Floyd Theater, Swain Student Activities Center.

“Kinyarwanda,” which won a 2011 Sundance Film Festival world cinema award, weaves six stories that unfold during the events that led to 800,000 deaths in 100 days; a developing friendship between a Muslim cleric and a Catholic priest is central to the movie.

“With ongoing violence in the world between Christians and Muslims and the continued threat of genocide present in numerous parts of the world, this important film can help begin a dialogue about interfaith cooperation, genocide prevent and, hopefully, reconciliation,” said Jennie Burnet, a UofL anthropology professor who organized the film screening.

Event sponsors are the Commonwealth Center for the Humanities and Society; Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research; College of Arts and Sciences’ international, diversity and outreach programs; anthropology and Pan-African studies departments; peace, justice and conflict transformation program; Muhammad Ali Institute for Peace and Justice; and the Student Activities Board’s director’s showcase.
