    DID YOU KNOW?

     

    UofL’s Staff Recognition Luncheon honors staff members for their service, from 10 years to 50 years. In its 33rd year, the luncheon has grown so large it has to be split into two sessions to accommodate all the honorees and their guests. This year’s first luncheon was held Friday; the next will be held Oct. 9 in the Brown and Williamson Club at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.

    1.) ‘UofL Today with Mark Hebert’ features the Pope and surgery in space

    Airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 6 p.m. on 93.9 FM The Ville; replayed on Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m.

    UofL’s Mark Hebert hosts two weekly 30-minute programs focusing on research and insights from expert UofL faculty, as well as stories about our successful students, and staff and campus events. This week’s schedule:

    ·       Monday, September 28: Political science professor David Buckley talks about the political impact of the Pope’s visit to America; School of Dentistry faculty, staff and students talk about giving free care to dozens of people in Somerset, Ky.; news conference announcing $3.76 million federal grant to UofL and U.K. for micro/nanotechnology

    2.) Larchmere String Quartet: Stringing Up for Classical New Music

    Free
    Formed in 2011, the Larchmere String Quartet has been praised as “an outstanding quartet with keen sensitivity and receptivity.” The quartet has performed across the United States, Europe and Canada with a number of notable collaborators. Equally devoted to music education and performance, the quartet holds the faculty position of Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Evansville, acting as artists-in-residence and principal players of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. The quartet’s free concert at UofL will include works by Haydn and Mendelssohn as well as two pieces by contemporary composer Zack Browning, who also is a University of Illinois associate professor emeritus of music. The concert is one of many opportunities to hear new music this fall from the School of Music, including the New Music Festival in November.     3.) Faculty/staff invited to nominate students for Mortar Board Honorary

    Sept. 30 deadline

    Faculty and staff are invited to nominate undergraduate students to apply for Mortar Board National Senior Honorary. Requirements are excellence in scholarship, leadership and service. The chapter is active in service to campus and the community with book drives, soup kitchen help and public lectures. Requirements include a GPA of 3.30 and 60 current credit hours. Applications are due by 4 p.m. on Sept. 30. Faculty/staff may also e-mail nominee names to advisor Gerry Williger.

    4.) How to Write an Effective Data Management Plan: What NIH Reviewers Want to See

    During this webinar, you will learn what counts as data, and understand the agencies’ expectations and requirements for the data management plan. The presenter will cover how to think about managing your data before you begin your proposed research to insure usability, long-run preservation and access. You will get the guidelines on funding the plan and examine model data management plans and processes to create them. This is not hard but it is a requirement for a competitive proposal.

    5.) University of Louisville Athletics hosting N4A Region II Conference

    Oct. 4-6, 8 a.m, to 5 p.m., Floyd Theater and Hampton Inn

    University of Louisville Athletics will serve as host for the 2015 NACDA-N4A Region II conference. Several athletic conference members from the AAC, ACC, BIG 12, PAC 12 and the SEC will be in attendance. Initial and continuing eligibility for prospective student-athletes, new technology utilization for academic progress monitoring and programming along with life-after-sport career options for today’s student-athletes are but a few topics that will be presented during this three-day conference.

    Are you aware that as a UofL employee, you are likely a mandatory Title IX reporter? Do you understand the responsibilities and requirements included in this role? There are two federal laws, Title IX and the Clery Act, that establish responsibilities for employees of universities to report certain types of crimes and incidents, especially sexual misconduct. To learn more about these laws, including the reporting requirements of “responsible employees,” and how to report, please register.

    7.) Free training continues Tuesday: Commercializing Innovations in the Healthcare Market

    All are invited to attend the new Trifecta Training Program for Life Science Technologies. The third of five weekly training sessions open to the UofL community will be held on Tuesday. Experienced speakers will present topics related to health-based innovations and entrepreneurship.

    8.) PLAN hosts workshop on CVs and resumes for graduate students

    Building a resume or CV that highlights your experience and skills as a unique candidate for a position is vital in the job search process. But when do you use a resume and when do you use a CV? Grad students need to know how to create both a resume and a CV and know the differences between them. This workshop introduces key elements and questions to consider in using one or the other.     9.) Understanding LGBT Health Disparities by Dr. Eli Pendleton and Dr. Lori Caloia

    Many health professionals express that they have not received much training in LGBT health during their academic training, and are often surprised at the shocking health disparities experienced by this population. Join Drs. Eli Pendleton and Lori Caloia from the department of family medicine as they provide an overview of health disparities in the LGBT population as well as an interactive format to explore cases that shed light on actions we can take to reverse these trends.

    10.) Egypt After the Pharaohs

    In the 21st century, we are accustomed to think of the monuments of ancient Egypt as the ultimate objects of Egyptian national pride. But has that always been the case? In this talk Jennifer Westerfeld, professor of history, will explore the fate of Egypt’s monumental architecture in the period after the pharaohs, in a time when Egypt was under Roman rule and the country’s Christian communities were crafting a variety of responses to the legacy of the ancient past.

    11.) Howard Gardner, author of ‘Multiple Intelligences’

    Dr. Howard Gardner, developmental psychologist and Harvard professor, received the Grawemeyer Award in Education in 1990 for his theories of ‘Multiple Intelligences.’ He will be speaking via Skype in Ekstrom Library Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 5 p.m. Please come and bring your students. This event is hosted by the College of Education and is part of our 30th Anniversary Grawemeyer Award event.

    14.) Subjects needed for clinical trial in graduate periodontics clinic on root coverage procedure

    School of Dentistry, 3rd Floor

    $150 discount off treatment price; seven visits over four months

    You are invited to take part in a research study because you need to have a root coverage treatment for gingival recession. The purpose of this study is to compare the percent root coverage obtained with a donor allograft called acellular dermal matrix (AlloDerm) using the coronally positioned tunnel technique alone or with intramucosal vertical incisions. All subjects should be at least 18 years of age and have one non-molar tooth with recession. IRB# 15.0532

    15.) Childhood obesity in children 10 to less than 14 years

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a research study to evaluate the effect of an investigational product on childhood obesity. White and African American male and female subjects 10 to less than 14 years old who are overweight, obese or normal weight may be eligible. If a child qualifies to participate, he or she will receive the product or placebo and study related care at no cost. Compensation will be provided for time/travel.

    16.) Type 1 diabetes mellitus study for adolescents and adults aged 12 to 35 years

    The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit and the Wendy L. Novak Diabetes Care Center are conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety of an experimental medication in 12 to 35 year olds who have recently been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. If the subject qualifies to take part in this research study, participation lasts up to two years; he/she will receive the study medication or a placebo and study-related care at no cost .     17.) Autism study for children 4 to 10 years old

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate how a medication treats abnormal EEG’s without seizures, as well as behavioral and neurological symptoms, in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). If a child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will receive the study medication or placebo and study-related care at no cost. Parents will be offered compensation for time/travel.

    18.) Pediatric pain study, 7 through 16 years

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety, pharmacokinetics and efficacy of an investigational drug used to treat moderate to severe prolonged or persistent pain.  Children 7 to less than 17 years of age who require continuous analgesia for moderate to severe pain for an extended period of time may be eligible for participation.  Patients will be reimbursed for reasonable travel costs associated with their participation in the study.

    19.) Pediatric constipation study

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit is conducting a clinical research study to assess the efficacy and safety of an investigational drug used to treat constipation. Children 6-17 years of age who have been diagnosed with functional constipation and are able to swallow capsules may be eligible to participate. Patients may be compensated for time/travel associated with their participation in the study.
