    Get in and out fast! Come early for a breakfast treat! Flu shots are free to students, faculty, and staff ($5 for retirees).     UofL’s Mark Hebert hosts two weekly 30-minute programs focusing on research and insights from expert UofL faculty, as well as stories about our successful students, and staff and campus events. This week’s schedule:

    3.) Last chance to register: Collect Meaningful Data to Inform What You Teach

    Sept. 24 and Oct. 29, noon to 1 p.m. (note: lunch will be available at 11:30 a.m.), Delphi Center, Ekstrom Library

    Join Drs. Marie Kendall Brown and Sara Fulmer in this two-part session as they teach you the fundamentals of the research-based practice called “Mid-Semester Feedback” (MSF). MSF’s are short feedback sessions you conduct with your students to gather formative feedback about student learning, attitudes, and experiences for the purpose of informing mid-stream course adjustments. Lunch is served so pre-registration is required.

    Free for GHN Wellness Center members

    Get in shape with GHN’s R.I.P.P.E.D. group fitness class. This class is specifically designed to make you work hard and get you heated—in a good way. This high intensity class that uses a combination of free weight, body weight, and resistance training will make you sweat. Feel your best this fall with a weekly session of “Get R.I.P.P.E.D.”

    5.) Free encrypted flash drives from IT for full compliance on your machines

    Information Technology appreciates how UofL continues to move forward on the university’s encryption mandate for protecting all machines used for storing, transferring or transmitting confidential and sensitive information. Full-disk encryption on all eligible devices must occur by Oct. 31. As an incentive for data security, IT is giving away free encrypted flash drives to the first 2,000 employees demonstrating full compliance. Please contact your Tier1 personnel about eligibility.

    6.) School of Medicine Research Committee announces new internal funding opportunity

    The School of Medicine Research Committee announces a new funding opportunity the Jewish Heritage Foundation for Excellence Research Enhancement Grants. The JHFE Research Enhancement Grant program offers funding to School of Medicine faculty principal investigators to gather new data to improve a previously submitted a multi-year, nationally peer reviewed grant application that scored well but was not funded. Applications are accepted quarterly. The upcoming deadline is Oct. 15.

    7.) Fourth Annual Pediatric Mental Health Symposium

    Topics include suicide prevention, Vermont Family Based Approach to mental health in primary care, psychopharmacology of aggression, integrated mental health care models, PTSD, impact of video games on mental health, and understanding temperament.

    9.) Free training continues Tuesday: Commercializing Innovations in the Healthcare Market

    All are invited to attend the new Trifecta Training Program for Life Science Technologies. The second of five weekly training sessions, open to the UofL community, will be held Tuesday, 9/22, in the CTRB, Room 123; from 4 – 6 p.m. These sessions have been designed to help you prepare Coulter, ExCITE and I-Corps applications as well as other translational grant applications. Experienced speakers will present topics related to health-based innovations and entrepreneurship.

    10.) Free Native American Film Festival begins tonight

    Sept. 21, 4 to 5:30 p.m., Floyd Theater, Student Activity Center

    Free

    The first half of the two-day Native American Film Festival will begin Monday night at 4 p.m. Monday’s movie, “Crying Earth Rise Up,” is a documentary about the effects of uranium mining on water sources. The event is sponsored by the Institute for Intercultural Communication, the Department of Communication, the Liberal Studies Project, and the Native American Student Organization. Discussions will follow the screening, and refreshments will be provided.

    11.) University of Louisville Suzuki Steps Baby/Toddler Classes

    Tuesday 6:30-7:30 p.m., Saturday 10:30-11:30 a.m., Suzuki Stars Music Academy, 3415 Bardstown Road, Suite 308A

    Eight Classes $120 or $20 per class

    Music Classes for babies and toddlers (ages 0-3). Using traditional nursery rhymes, action songs, lullabies and instruments these classes seek to build on the child’s natural delight in learning and lay the foundation for musical skills such as beat, rhythm, pitch and tone. Through parent/child interactions and class participation, students start to acquire attributes of trust, sharing, success and communication.

    Additional Information: These classes will be led by Blaise Poth, Jennifer Shackleton and Cecilia Huerta Lauf. All are teachers on faculty with the Community Music Program at UofL and also musicians with the Louisville Orchestra and other local arts organizations.
