    DID YOU KNOW?

     

    The UofL team of Blair Cade, Gerard Buono, Jake Gross, Csaba Biro and Matt Bergman won the Urban Bourbon Half Marathon-Sam Swope Fiat Corporate Challenge on Saturday. The team beat out eight competitors with a total time of 4:38:33.45; Frost Brown Todd came in second at 5:01:15.36. A celebration and trophy presentation will be held at noon Friday at the GHN Wellness Center at Humana Gym.

    1.) Benefits fair on Belknap today

    Oct. 29, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    Today is the last day to meet with a benefits vendor and your benefits team during this year’s Open Enrollment. If you still have questions, they have answers. Representatives will be on Belknap Campus in the Human Resources office, 1980 Arthur St., today to answer questions and help you navigate  through the Open Enrollment process. The choices you make now will determine your benefits in 2015. Open Enrollment ends Friday, Oct. 31, at midnight.  Go to the Open Enrollment website for information and to make your elections.

     

    Zombies and Spooky Music

    2.) Halloween Spooktacular to be held Friday

    Oct. 31, 8 p.m., Comstock Hall, School of Music

    Free, open to the public

    Join the University Symphony Orchestra for a spellbinding night of music at the annual Halloween Spooktacular. The concert features a mix of classics and modern music. The program includes spooky orchestral pieces by Hector Berlioz and Alexander Borodin alongside chilling arrangements from the soundtracks of “Psycho,” “Ghostbusters” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

     

    3.) Why are zombies so popular?

    UofL English professor Aaron Jaffe studied the issue and co-wrote The Year’s Work at the Zombie Research Center, a book exploring the reasons. He and his colleague will discuss their work.

    A zombie walk complete with makeup station and costume contest starts at The Thinker statue by Grawemeyer Hall. Two student groups and Commonwealth Center for the Humanities and Society are sponsors.

    The service that provides temporary accounts for guests on the university’s wireless network ulopen has been replaced by ulsponsor. The new service will provide a web-based portal to create and maintain authenticated accounts for sponsored guests of the university. The ulsponsor portal gives faculty/staff a full range of control including creation, duration, reactivation and closing of accounts.     11.) Network Attached Storage (NAS) drives offline Friday night

    Oct. 31, 10 p.m. to Nov. 1, 2 a.m.

    The NAS server tha provides network disk space storage will be upgraded and unavailable during the regular Preventative Maintenance (PM) period. Access to all individual or departmental remote disk drives such as the H: and I: drives will be affected.

    Nov. 15, 8 to 10 a.m., start/finish on Floyd Street (in front of YUM practice facility and old silos parking lot)

    $20 for faculty/staff/students (use promo code CARDS15), $35 public

    University of Louisville and Seven Counties Services join forces in the Run With Our Heroes 5K as part of Mayor Fischer’s Week of Valor. UofL faculty/staff/students receive a $15 discount using promo code CARDS15. In collaboration with UofL, the city of Louisville and Mayor Greg Fischer, this event celebrates all branches of the military, veterans and their families.     16.) Funding Opportunity: UofL Coulter Translational Partnership

    Learn more about the UofL-Coulter Translational Partnership. Please join us for discussion and information session about the program, including a presentation by Mark Slaughter, MD, and Rob Keynton, PhD.     The Department of Cardiovascular Medicine features Henry B. Sadlo, MD, UofL assistant professor, Department of Cardiovascular Medicine. Dr. Sadlo will present Preventive Cardiology and the Role of the Coronary Calcium Scan, focusing on understanding why and the need for preventive cardiology, as well as understanding why there is a new enthusiasm for coronary calcium scanning.

    DOM Grand Rounds features Chester V. Oddis, MD, professor of medicine and director, Myositis Center at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Oddis will present the 2014 John Walker Moore Lecture, An Update on Inflammatory Myopathy, focusing on treatment aspects in patients with inflammatory myopathies and the systemic nature of autoimmune muscle disease.
