    DID YOU KNOW?

    The mysterious signs seen on lamp posts around campus are the work of Professor Mary Carothers’ Foundation 2D Design class. Students designed warning symbols for contemporary problems like animal neglect and body negativity and displayed their signs in public to invite discussion on the issues. Their work will remain in place until today.

    1.) Benefits fair on Belknap today and tomorrow

    Oct. 28 and Oct. 29, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    HR benefits representatives and UofL’ s benefits vendors (Anthem BlueCross BlueShield, Chard-Snyder, Get Healthy Now, Humana Dental, National Vision Administrators, Express Scripts and EAP) will be on Belknap Campus in the Human Resources office, 1980 Arthur St.,  today and tomorrow to answer questions and help you navigate  through the Open Enrollment process. Benefits Open Enrollment ends Friday, Oct. 31, at midnight.  The Health Risk Assessment for Get Healthy Now must be completed by Nov. 17, and prizes will be awarded at the fair for those who complete it! Go to the Open Enrollment website for information and to make your benefit elections.

    Drs. Ruth Carrico, Forest Arnold and Paul McKinney will speak on Ebola trends, what we are doing to be prepared and general information on the disease.  Also, those who are thinking about traveling, presenting, doing research or studying in Africa can learn about the interim policy regarding travel to the continent.

    Join presenters Edna Ross, Samantha McClellan and Robert Detmering as they show and tell how they have developed their own digital tools to promote critical thinking and information literacy in the classroom. Join your colleagues as session facilitators share their use of Blackboard modules and LibGuides, and invite discussion about ways to use these tools for your own courses. Lunch is served so pre-registration is required.

    5.) Seeking participants who have ended a relationship in the past year

    Timeslots available weekdays and weekends, Davidson Hall, Room 316

    Recruiting participants age 19 to 30 who have ended a dating relationship in the past year and experienced many times when this ex-partner: verbally attacked, isolated or controlled you; withheld information; denied you resources. You’re ineligible if you were ever married or are experiencing current relationship violence. You’ll complete questionnaires and recall events from your past relationship during two 1-hour visits with a $25 compensation, IRB#13.0044.

    6.) Individuals age 65 years and older needed

    The Neuropsychology and Aging Lab of Dr. Benjamin Mast at the psychological and brain sciences department is investigating the association between musical training and cognition in adults aged 65 years and older. Participation takes about three hours, and involves answering questions and completing cognitive tests. Participation can take place in the home or other place of convenience. IRB: 12.0460

    7.) McConnell Center talk centers on war on poverty

    Oct. 28, 6 to 7 p.m., Chao Auditorium

    Free and open to the public

    In the third talk of the McConnell Center’s “Debating America” lecture series, Kent Germany, PhD, will explore once-secret White House recordings and documents to uncover what President Lyndon B. Johnson intended by the War on Poverty.” Germany will discuss how the vision set by LBJ has evolved over 50 years into something that challenges easy labels of success or failure. Germany is a history and African American studies professor at the University of South Carolina.
