    DID YOU KNOW?

     

    Sodexo, UofL’s food service provider, is bringing Executive Chef David Calquin of Chile to UofL as part of the company’s 2014-2015 Global Chef Program. The program sends chefs to different locales to share authentic international cuisine with local teams, students, faculty and staff. Chef David will be preparing lunch and dinner at the Ville Grill on Oct. 27, giving away free lunch samples at the SAC on Oct. 28, and will again be preparing dinner at the Ville Grille Oct. 28.     1.) Benefits Tip: Flexible spending accounts=more pocket money!

    Flexible spending accounts allow you to set aside money for health care or dependent care through pre-tax payroll deductions. When you elect a health care FSA, your account is funded with preloaded dollars of your elected amount beginning Jan. 1. Your annual maximum contribution is $2,500. For a dependent care FSA, you may contribute up to $5,000 per year through payroll deduction. Unused funds do not rollover and are not returned. Plan carefully to set aside just what you need. Learn more at Chard Snyder. Open Enrollment ends Friday, Oct. 31, at midnight.  Go to the Open Enrollment website for information and to make your elections.

    2.) Watch the WLKY Bell Awards featuring UofL academic counselor Eddie Bobbitt

    Oct. 25, 8 to 9 p.m., WLKY

    Eddie Bobbitt, an academic counselor for the social sciences team in A&S Advising and Student Services, earlier this month won a 2014 WLKY Bell Award honoring individuals who demonstrate the “spirit of Louisville” through community service and volunteering. He has volunteered with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)/New Albany, Special Olympics, Community Foundation of Southern Indiana, Interfaith Community Council and Northside Christian Church. For six years, he volunteered with Camp Quality of Kentuckiana before accepting a small paid position in 2013. A full-time employee at UofL, Eddie Bobbitt created a motivational speaking series called “Shift” for middle and high school students, and is a board member for Keep New Albany Clean & Green.

    3.) Sustainability, regenerative design and public art to be discussed

    Nov. 4, 6 to 7:30 p.m., Carnegie Center for Art and History, 201East Spring St., New Albany, Indiana.

    Free, but reservations are requested

    Ecologist Claude Stephens, facilitator of outreach and regenerative design at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest, will lead a discussion on sustainability and regenerative design, and then visit sites for New Albany’s 2015 Public Art Project: Today and Tomorrow. Stephens will then analyze the interaction of public art place-making and regenerative design based on responses of tour participants to the sites visited.

    Raising a toddler is hard, isn’t it? Your kid won’t eat, won’t sleep and won’t stop crying! It’s even more difficult to raise a child now because of pressure to do everything perfectly like in blog posts and articles. Don’t stress out, don’t worry about being perfect, but you should come and learn more about being a better parent from an expert. Dr. Lawrence Wasser, nationally renowned pediatrician, is hosting a FREE session on great parenting tips and advice.

    5.) Help students overcome obstacles

    Freshman year can be a daunting and scary experience. Students are away from home for the first time and learning new things about school and life. These instances can be even more difficult for first generation college students. Research shows that first generation college students experience more obstacles than students whose parents attended college. This session will offer suggestions on how to help students overcome those difficult obstacles and help them flourish in their college years.

    6.) Is there a better way to complete routine work tasks?

    Ever wonder if there is a better way to complete routine work tasks? Are the tasks even necessary or is it just the way things have always been done so no one questions them? Some tasks are necessary evils of the job, but others can be streamlined, condensed, or completely changed to make life simpler at work. Join us for a 90-minute workshop on asking detailed questions to help you evaluate and improve your current processes.

    9.) Garden Commons workday scheduled

    Oct. 31, 4 to 6 p.m., Garden Commons (next to the Cultural Center)

    Interested in health, sustainability, good food, and growing things?! We need your help to make our garden grow! Please join us as we weed, water, and harvest from UofL’s organic Garden Commons! No prior experience necessary. Tools and gloves provided. Dress to get dirty. The Garden Commons is open to participation throughout the year from students, staff, faculty and community members.

    Want to help students articulate and examine the assumptions they have about themselves which impact their learning and examine how our assumptions about thinking and learning affect our teaching? We will explore teaching strategies designed to help students and faculty engage in self-reflection about the assumptions which impact learning. Join your colleagues for dinner and “Addressing Accurate and Inaccurate Student (and Faculty) Assumptions about Teaching and Learning with Edna Ross.

    11.) Fright Light Halloween Party at planetarium

    $5 per person

    Ghoulishly good fun is in store at the planetarium’s annual Fright Light Halloween party. Kids get to play pumpkin bowling and other fun Halloween-themed games, get treats and the whole family gets to see our ever-popular Laser Fright Light music show. No tricks or scares at this frighteningly fun family event.

    Pradeep Deshpande, professor emeritus of chemical engineering at UofL and president of Louisville-based Six Sigma and Advanced Controls, Inc., will discuss how to Achieve True Happiness Scientifically.” Deshpande will draw on his technical background in process control and six sigma, ancient Indian wisdom and the contributions of renowned Western scientists to propose his theory of World Transformation, a subset of which he considers to be true happiness.
