    DID YOU KNOW?

     

    Eliza Atkins Gleason, the first African-American to earn a PhD in library science, was inducted into the College of Arts and Sciences Hall of Honor in 2010. From 1931 to 1935, she worked at the segregated Louisville Municipal College (later absorbed into A&S), where she was head librarian and founder of a library department. Her daughter, Dr. Joy Gleason Carew, is an associate professor of Pan-African studies at UofL.

    Thursdays through Oct. 29, 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., 400 block of E. Gray St.

    Some items available today will include: Pie pumpkins, butternut squash, spaghetti squash, apples, apple cider by the cup, small apple tarts, apple chips, local honey, breads, jams, baby bok choy, corn, tomatoes, squash, zucchini, beets, cabbage, onions, cucumbers, okra, peppers, green beans, maple syrup, chicken, pork, dessert dumplings and homemade soaps and lotions. Edin Farm will take deposits on holiday turkeys. Louisville Water will be at the market this Thursday providing their Pure Tap to go services.     2.) Benefits Tip: Flexible Spending Accounts provide pre-tax savings

    Use FSA pre-tax dollars toward medical, dental, vision, pharmacy and daycare expenses. This is a savings to you and adds extra money in your pocket. The annual maximum contribution for Health Care FSA is $2,550 and $5,000 for Dependent Care FSA. Unused FSA funds DO NOT rollover from one calendar year to the next and are not returned to you.     “Mysteries of Human Memory,” part of the Grawemeyer Awards 30th Anniversary Celebration, features short lectures, a panel discussion and question-and-answer session with former Grawemeyer Award in Psychology winners and prominent scientists Elizabeth Loftus, James McGaugh and Lynn Nadel.     9.) We heard you: New Blackboard Grade Center import feature available

    Faculty, we heard you. There is now an easier way to load students’ final letter grades into PeopleSoft from Blackboard Grade Center. All standard letter grades may be uploaded using this new feature except for failing grades (EF, UF, NP).

    10.) Office of New Student Orientation hiring student office assistants

    The Office of Orientation is seeking to fill two part-time Student Office Assistant positions beginning December. Students will work 12-15 hours per week in the Orientation office through the Spring 2016 semester, with 40+ hours during summer Freshman Orientation sessions.     12.) University Start-Ups: Getting Beyond Challenges – Making It Happen Conference Hosted by OTT and OVALS

    The conference is being put on by technology transfer offices from UofL, IU, OSU, OU, PU, UofDayton, UK, and UC and is designed to teach attendees how to commercialize research through start-up formation. Mary Nan Mallory, MD, will deliver the keynote address highlighting her experience as a faculty entrepreneur. Panel discussions and the keynote address will be held Nov 10.     15.) Kansas State University physicist to discuss dark energy

    Bharat Ratra will present a talk on the topic Dark Energy: constant or time variable? (… and other open questions.) Professor Ratra will review a few simple dark energy models and compare their predictions to observational data, to derive dark energy model-parameter constraints and to test consistency of different data sets. He will conclude with a list of open cosmological questions.
