    21st Century University Initiative

    1.) Open forums scheduled for faculty/staff

    Oct. 19-20

    UofL President James Ramsey and Interim Provost Neville Pinto will hold faculty/staff forums to discuss progress on the 21st Century University Initiative. The forums will be Monday, Oct. 19, at 10 a.m. in the Kornhauser Auditorium on the Health Sciences Center campus and Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 1:30 p.m. in the Floyd Theater, Student Activities Center, on the Belknap Campus.

    2.) Register now for the Dec. 4 holiday shopping tour

    Visit locally owned businesses as UofL teams up with the Louisville Independent Business Alliance for the fifth annual Holiday Cards Buy Local Shopping Tour. Activities begin with festive drinks and a light breakfast at the University Club at 8 a.m. Participants board a bus at 9 a.m. to begin their day of shopping and return to the club for a 4 p.m.-6 p.m. reception featuring mixology demonstrations and samples, hot hors d’oeuvres and door prizes. A more detailed itinerary will be posted closer to the event at events.louisville.edu/event/holiday_cards_buy_local_shopping_tour.  The tour is open to the public, but bus seating is limited and UofL faculty, staff, students and alumni will receive priority. Participants must register online at uoflalumni.org/holidaycards15.

    3.) Music eX Series Presents: Lee Luvisi and Dror Biran on pianos 

    Sunday, Oct. 18, 3 p.m., School of Music, Comstock Concert Hall  

    $15, $5 for students.

    The UofL School of Music is giving listeners the chance to the hear works of some of the world’s best composers while helping fund Louisville’s next generation of great musicians. Started by Dror Biran, a UofL piano professor and artistic director, the Music eX Series features classical concerts that celebrate piano and strings music, while raising funds for student scholarships. A major highlight for the series, which features a mix of esteemed guest artists and UofL faculty, is a concert by Lee Luvisi and Biran on Sun., Oct. 18.

    4.) Faculty: Explore how to write learning objectives that are measurable, observable, and learner-centered

    Nov. 2, noon to 1 p.m. (note: lunch will be available at 11:30 a.m. Presenters will also stay an extra 30 minutes until 1:30 p.m. for additional hands-on practice and support.), Nov. 2 Delphi Center, Ekstrom Library

    One of the first things our students want to know is: What am I going to learn in this course? This is not the same as What will this course cover? Clearly describing what will be learned is the vital first step in creating a rich and meaningful educational experience. This workshop will provide you with a primer on how to write learning objectives that are measurable, observable, and learner-centered. Lunch is served so pre-registration is required.

    6.) We put the “Fun” in Functional Fitness

    Saturdays: 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., Get Healthy Now Wellness Center, Humana Gym

    Free for GHN Wellness Center members

    This class focuses on core fitness that can easily translate into daily activities and other sports. It incorporates all of the major muscle groups as well as the muscles you never knew you had. You will get efficient, quality functional movements that will enhance “trouble areas”, nourish your spine, revitalize your postural muscles and strengthen your core with every movement. Exercises are shown at different skill levels so each person can work to their own individual competency.

    7.) REMINDER: 300 Block of West Cardinal Boulevard closed Friday

    Oct. 16, 7 a.m. to midnight, 300 Block West Cardinal Boulevard

    To prepare for the SAB Homecoming Concert on the 300 block of West Cardinal Boulevard, the street will close at 7 a.m. The street will remain closed until 12:00 midnight. Cars should be moved from the block prior to 7 a.m. Friday. Please make alternate plans for travel in the area. No other streets or parking areas will be affected by the street closing.

    8.) ‘A Midnight Swan Song’ – Film Premiere

    The latest film from local filmmakers Evan Sennett and Matthew Rivera is a 27-minute jazzopatin’ action-packed comedy-drama animal-crackers-in-your-duck-soup picture for the ages. It will have its Louisville premiere at the Floyd Theatre.

    10.) Put your passion into action with UofL EcoReps today

    Oct. 16, noon to 1 p.m., Room W210, Ekstrom Library

    Interested in environmental, social and economic stewardship, but sick of committee meetings?! UofL’s award-winning EcoReps program is here for you! The purpose is to educate and empower faculty, staff and students to take leadership and action for a more sustainable UofL. We provide basic training and resources, service opportunities, and certification as a peer-to-peer advocate for sustainability. Today we continue our fall series of third Friday workshops with free lunch and a program overview.

     

    11.) Green Tip: Sustainability Week starts Monday with Campus Sustainability Tour

    Engage in planetary and social justice during UofL’s 6th annual Sustainability Week. It kicks off Monday with Weigh the Waste 11-2 at The Ville Grill, a noon talk on Energy-Efficient Home Design (123 Urban Studies) and a 3 p.m. Campus Sustainability Tour leaving the Cultural Center. Tuesday features a Tree Tour and Planting plus a free Bike Maintenance Workshop. The Campus Sustainability Day fair on the Quad is Wednesday 10-2 with free document, disk and video recycling at the College of Business circle.

    As part of the Brown and Williamson Lecture Series, the Biology Department is pleased to announce a presentation by Dr. Brian Wisenden, professor and chair at Minnesota State University, managing editor, Behaviour. Dr. Wisenden’s talk is titled Scents of Danger: Evolutionary ecology of Chemically-mediated antipredator behavior in fishes.
