    DID YOU KNOW?

     

    Today is the last day of the season for the Belknap Farmers Market, located next to the Ville Grill at 3rd and Brandeis. This was the second year for the market, which not only features great local food items but spotlights a local musician every week, too. Today’s entertainer will be singer Garrett Schlaegel, son of David Schlaegel, who is manager of custodial services for our own Physical Plant and is also a vendor at the market.

    Thursdays through Oct. 29, 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., 400 block of E. Gray St.

    Some items available today will include: Pie pumpkins, butternut squash, spaghetti squash, apples, apple cider by the cup, small apple tarts, apple chips, local honey, breads, jams, baby bok choy, corn, tomatoes, squash, zucchini, beets, cabbage, onions, cucumbers, okra, peppers, green beans, maple syrup, chicken, pork, dessert dumplings and homemade soaps and lotions. Edin Farm will take deposits on holiday turkeys. Lunch trucks: Holy Mole and Boss Hog’s BBQ.

    2.) Belknap: Final day of the season

    Oct. 15, 3:30 to 6 p.m., 3rd and Brandeis next to the Ville Grill.

    Some items available today will include: Apples, corn, green beans, squash, zucchini, tomatoes, onions, purple hull peas, lamb, chicken, pork, eggs, homemade breads and baked goods, homemade jams and jellies, honey, popcorn, lemon shake-ups, iced tea. Also, toxin-free home and personal-use products, homemade wood products (reclaimed wood items), annual plants, garden accessories and markers. Today’s entertainer will be singer Garrett Schlaegel.

    3.) Annual Corn Island Storytelling Festival is Oct. 23 at UofL

    Oct. 23, 6 to 10 p.m., Lutz Hall Lawn

    Free

    UofL, Blackacre Historic Homestead and the International Order of E.A.R.S. present the Corn Island Storytelling Festival Oct. 23-24. The Oct. 23 date is at UofL and is free and open to the public. A fall festival for children runs 6 to 7:30 p.m. with crafts, games and a native American drum circle. Storytelling begins at 7 p.m. Concessions will be available for purchase from Boss Hog’s BBQ. Sponsors include Fifth Third, Louisville Metro Government, Vice Provost for Diversity and International Affairs and Kentucky Homefront.

    4.) Red Barn Game Watch – UofL vs. Florida State

    Oct. 17, 11:15 a.m. – doors open, game at noon, Red Barn

    Free

    The College of Arts and Sciences and the Red Barn Alumni Association will host the 5th Annual Football Game Watch at the Red Barn on Oct. 17. Doors open at 11:15 a.m. with tipoff for the UofL vs. Florida State at noon. Free food will be provided along with fantastic door prizes.

    5.) Planetarium – Fright Light Halloween Party.

    Oct. 31, 1 to 4 p.m., Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium

    Spook-tacular family fun is had by all at the planetarium’s annual Fright Light Party. There are Halloween games and treats for kids along with the much-loved Fright Light Laser Music Show (showtimes: 1, 2, and 3 p.m.). All of this fun is just $5 per person (no free admits, passes, coupons or UofL discounts for this special event). More information at planetarium.louisville.edu

    6.) Free concert with organist and Bach expert Russell Stinson

    Oct. 15, 8 p.m., School of Music, Comstock Concert Hall 

    Organist Russel Stinson is performing a free concert Thursday as the 2015 Gerhard Herz Visiting Professor of Bach Studies at UofL. Stinson is a professor of music at Lyon College. Stinson also serves on the editorial board of Bach Perspectives, a series published by the American Bach Society. The annual visiting professorship in Bach studies was provided by professor Gerhard Herz (1911-2000), world-renowned scholar of Bach and beloved teacher, who founded the music history department in the College of Arts and Sciences and was department chair from 1956-1978. During residence, the visiting scholar teaches a seminar on Bach’s music and continues to work on scholarly projects using the Gerhard Herz Collection of resources and Bach scores for that purpose.

    Grawemeyer Awards 30th Anniversary

    7.) Symposium today: Innovative Approaches to Education

    Oct. 15, 5 p.m., Comstock Hall, School of Music

    Innovative approaches to education will be explored as former Grawemeyer Award in Education winners Carol Gilligan, Pasi Sahlberg and Vanessa Siddle Walker—all internationally renowned experts—come together to share their thoughts, ideas and research. UofL alumnus and journalist Bob Edwards will moderate.

    8.) Diane Ravitch to hold discussion

    Oct. 20, 5 p.m., Ekstrom Library, Room W104

    “The Death and Life of the American School System” takes a look at how testing and choice are undermining education. Based on Diane Ravitch’s 2010 book of the same name that earned her the 2014 Grawemeyer Award in Education, she will join the talk via Skype.

    UofL’s flu shot clinics are over, but the free shots remain available at the permanent Campus Health clinics at Cardinal Station (next to the baseball stadium) and on the HSC campus in the Healthcare Outpatient Center. Dr. Elder is the professor and director of research at the University of Cincinnati’s Department of Family & Community Medicine. Offit is the director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia as well as the Maurice R. Hilleman Professor of Vaccinology and a professor of pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He will be presenting “The Philadelphia Measles Epidemic: Lessons from the Past or Prologue to the Future.”
