The calotype was the first photographic process that produced a negative to create a photograph. It results in images that are soft and dreamy. Calotype prints are on exhibit in the Photographic Archives gallery in Ekstrom Library through December.

21st Century University Initiative
1.) Open forums scheduled for faculty/staff
Oct. 19-20
UofL President James Ramsey and Interim Provost Neville Pinto will hold faculty/staff forums to discuss progress on the 21st Century University Initiative. The forums will be Monday, Oct. 19, at 10 a.m. in the Kornhauser Auditorium on the Health Sciences Center campus and Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 1:30 p.m. in the Floyd Theater, Student Activities Center, on the Belknap Campus.
2.) ‘UofL Today with Mark Hebert’ features Homecoming, cancer research
Airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 6 p.m. on 93.9 FM The Ville; replayed on Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m.
UofL’s Mark Hebert hosts two weekly 30-minute programs focusing on research and insights from expert UofL faculty, as well as stories about our successful students, and staff and campus events. This week’s schedule:

Oct. 17 – Deb Dietzler from UofL Alumni Assocation on Homecoming week activities; Kiki Petrosino, English professor, discusses Axton Reading Series; Charlie Leonard, executive director of the Grawemeyer Awards, tells us about upcoming public events, talks and discussions tied to the Grawemeyer Awards 30th anniversary.

3.) UofL’s inaugural Thank a Donor Day: Please stop by!
UofL’s inaugural Thank a Donor Day! event, hosted by the Office of Donor Relations, is Tuesday, Oct. 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Humanities Quad and Wednesday, Oct. 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the HSC Quad. The purpose is to say thank you to our donors who support UofL through private donations. During this celebration of philanthropy, UofL’s alumni, faculty, staff and students will sign a large sign and create a video.

Schnatter Center for Free Enterprise presents Immigration: Good or Bad for America? a debate featuring opposing viewpoints from Alex Nowrasteh from the CATO Institute and Mark Krikorian from the Center for Immigration Studies. 6.) Last chance for on campus flu shots this week
Free flu shots will be available on Tuesday, Oct 13 from 10-3 in Duthie Hall at the Speed School. Follow the yard signs to find us! Flu shots are free to students, faculty, and staff ($5 for retirees). This will be the last flu shot clinic offered on campus. 10.) MBA students compete in Ballard Morton New Venture Competition

UofL MBA student entrepreneurs will compete for $30,000 in business start-up cash at the 2015 Ballard Morton New Venture Competition. Three teams will present their new business concepts on Friday 10/16 at a Trade Show and Fast Pitch competition. Business Plan presentations are Saturday, 10/17, starting at 8:00 a.m. in the PNC Horn Auditorium at the College of Business. Free and open to the public.

13.) Childhood obesity in children 10 to less than 14 years old

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a research study to evaluate the effect of an investigational product on childhood obesity. White and African American male and female subjects 10 to less than 14 years old who are overweight, obese or normal weight may be eligible. If a child qualifies to participate, he or she will receive the product or placebo and study related care at no cost. Compensation will be provided for time/travel.

14.) Type 1 diabetes mellitus study for adolescents and adults aged 12 to 35 years

The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit and the Wendy L. Novak Diabetes Care Center are conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety of an experimental medication in 12 to 35 year olds who have recently been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. If the subject qualifies to take part in this research study, participation lasts up to two years; he/she will receive the study medication or a placebo and study-related care at no cost . Compensation available for time/travel.

15.) Pediatric pain study, 7 through 16 years

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety, pharmacokinetics and efficacy of an investigational drug used to treat moderate to severe prolonged or persistent pain. Children 7 to less than 17 years of age who require continuous analgesia for moderate to severe pain for an extended period of time may be eligible for participation. Patients will be reimbursed for reasonable travel costs associated with their participation in the study.

16.) Pediatric constipation study

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit is conducting a clinical research study to assess the efficacy and safety of an investigational drug used to treat constipation. Children 6-17 years of age who have been diagnosed with functional constipation and are able to swallow capsules may be eligible to participate. Patients may be compensated for time/travel associated with their participation in the study.
