DID YOU KNOW

Fifty-one students from UofL’s School of Dentistry visited local elementary schools last week to teach kids the importance of brushing and flossing their teeth. 
 

FACULTY AND STAFF NOTABLES

Emily Neal, a forensic nurse specialist at the University of Louisville Kosair Charities Division of Pediatric Forensic Medicine, is one of six honorees chosen for this year’s Nightingale Awards. Neal evaluates children who are suspected victims of abuse and neglect and ensures that perpetrators of abuse are prosecuted via legal testimony.

Model United Nations meeting

As a part of the UN Day Program on Nov. 4, the United Nations Association-USA Kentucky Division will host a meeting and speaker on campus that is free and open to the public. At 10 a.m. is the UNA-USA KY Board Meeting & Invocation; from 11 a.m. to noon is the UN Day Proclamation and speaker Andrea Risotto, director of Communications, Better World Campaign, UN Foundation (Washington, D.C.), on the topic: “Refugees: Adopt-A-Future for refugee schools & education.”

Steven Humphrey Undergraduate Philosophy Colloquium

Students from UofL and surrounding universities will present their papers from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Professor Kristie Dotson, Michigan State University, will present the Keynote Address, “Reintroducing Identity Politics: Towards a Decolonial, Black Feminist Praxis” at 3:45 p.m. Program schedule is posted on Philosophy Department Web page and Humanities Building First Floor Monitor. Office of New Student Orientation hiring Student Office Assistants

The Office of New Student Orientation is currently hiring for Student Office Assistant positions beginning January 2017. Students will work 12 to 15 hours/week in the Orientation office through the Spring 2017 semester, with 30 hours/week during summer Freshman Orientation sessions. Music of Shakespeare’s London

November 4, 8 p.m., School of Music, Comstock Concert Hall 105 W. Brandeis Ave.; Free
Directed by Jack Ashworth, UofL’s Early Music Ensemble will feature songs, dances and fantasias heard in England’s streets and pubs, as well as the stately homes of the upper class. Listeners will enjoy sounds of traditional renaissance instruments such as the viola da gamba, recorder, lute and virginal, along with the cello and violin. The show is part of Will in the Ville, the city-wide celebration of all things Shakespeare.

Garden Commons Workshop – Aquaponics

November 7, 3 p.m., Garden Commons at the Cultural Center
Join us in UofL’s organic garden for a group workday and workshop focused on starting production in the aquaponics system we’ve built inside our greenhouse. Learn how to grow hydroponic vegetables by recycling fish waste. Anyone can work in the garden any time, but we’ll gather together every other Monday at 3 p.m. from Nov. 7 to Dec. 5. No prior experience necessary. Tools and gloves provided.

Green Tip: Recycling is not free, generate less and break down boxes

You can recycle any kind of plastic, glass, metal, paper and cardboard in UofL’s single-stream recycling bins. But recycling costs UofL more than landfill dumping and we pay for it by volume, not weight. You can help us save money while cutting the amount of diesel burned and pollution emitted to empty our recycling dumpsters by generating less waste and taking care to always break down boxes and crush containers.
