    1.) Last chance to get your tickets for shopping tour

    The annual Holiday Cards “Buy Local” Shopping Tour takes shoppers to locally owned businesses, celebrating all that is unique about the city of Louisville. It also begins and ends with refreshments and fun (door prizes!) at the University Club. The tour is Friday, Dec. 5, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and there are just a few seats left on the buses.     2.) Orion and Kentuckiana’s role in enabling deep space exploration

    Dec. 4, 7 to 9 p.m., Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium

    Join Rich Boling, Techshot, Inc., vice president of corporate advancement, as he explores Kentuckiana’s rich history connected to space exploration, and learn about Orion, NASA’s newest spacecraft intended to eventually take humans to Mars. Models of some of the space research devices developed by Techshot and sent into space will be on exhibit in the planetarium lobby.

    3.) Interested in coming out of your comfort zone?

    Staff Development and Employee Relations are looking for volunteers to help with the 2015 Spring Training Catalog. Are you interested in coming out of your comfort zone and volunteering your time? This is a great opportunity to present any research you’ve been working on, practice your presentation and public speaking skills, and a great addition to your resume. We are looking for session topics that would benefit professional and personal development in some way. Be creative, be adventurous!

    5.) Managing holiday stress

    Holidays can be a joyous time but can also create a significant amount of stress for families and individuals. This workshop provides participants with an opportunity to explore their beliefs, feelings and attitudes about the upcoming holidays and provide tools for handling the season with grace, ease and confidence.

    6.) Safe Zone II

    This workshop is a continuation of what you learned in Safe Zone I. You will continue to build on information you received as well as break down stereotypes and open up important dialogue. Please feel free to come even if you haven’t attended the first session. This is a relaxed and informative session intended to help build alliances and friendships.

    7.) Blackboard to be upgraded during the December holiday break

    Blackboard will be upgraded over winter break. Blackboard will be unavailable from 10 p.m. on Dec. 19 to 5 p.m. on Dec. 22. This version will introduce several new features, fixes and design improvements.

    8.) UofL Today sets holiday publishing schedule

    The UofL Today email is published Monday through Friday. Due to the upcoming university holidays, UofL Today will not be sent out Nov. 27-28 and Dec. 25 to Jan. 2. The deadline for Dec. 1 announcements is 10 a.m., Nov. 26; and for Jan. 5 announcements is 10 a.m., Dec. 24. Contact Janet Cappiello with any questions.

     

    9.) UofL Golf Club hosting Thanksgiving buffet

    Nov. 27

    UofL owns the UofL Golf Club (formerly The Cardinal Club), and you don’t have to be a member to dine there. The Ville Restaurant & Lounge at ULGC is holding a traditional Thanksgiving dinner buffet on Thanksgiving Day. Items on the menu include ham, turkey, pork loin, country style green beans, cranberry stuffing and three kinds of desserts. Prices are $21.95 for adults, $8.95 for children 4 to 11 and kids under 3 eat free. Reservations: 852-2452. The ULGC is located at 401 Champions Way, Simpsonville.

     

    10.) Reminder: Submit your events to the Winterfest 2015 calendar

    If your office is holding events Jan. 7 to Jan. 19 and wants them included in the WinterFest calendar, the final deadline to submit is Friday, Nov. 21. WF welcomes our new and returning students to campus as they begin the spring semester, so we want them to have a full calendar of exciting opportunities!     11.) Volunteers needed for Winterfest welcome and info station

    Jan. 7 and 8, SAC

    Volunteers are needed to staff the welcome and info station on the first floor of the SAC. Shifts that last 1.25 hours are available from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.. Volunteers will answer questions and offer campus resources, prizes and free coffee and samples from Jazzman’s. If you’re interested in volunteering, please fill out this form. WinterFest 2015 will be held Jan. 7 to 19.

    12.) Participate in Cards writing cards

    Faculty, staff and alumni volunteers are invited again to write congratulatory notes to newly admitted UofL students at a special Cards Writing Cards event. Complimentary food, drinks and an opportunity to network with fellow alumni will be included. All stationery supplies will be provided. No RSVP required.

    14.) Reminder: Delphi Center seeking faculty input

    Faculty: Please take 10 minutes to offer your feedback about Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning programs. Your feedback is integral to the continuous improvement of the Delphi Center’s offerings and communications strategies.     15.) Book-in-Common essay contest: Faculty encouraged to assign essays

    Essay contest deadline: Dec 3.

    First Year Initiatives is once again teaming up with i2a to sponsor the Book-in-Common essay contest for first-year and upper-class students based on this year’s text, “This I Believe.” Faculty are encouraged to assign “This I Believe” essays for credit or extra credit in their undergraduate courses and to promote the contest to students. Top first-year prize is a $350 scholarship and top upper-class prize is a $100 scholarship.

    17.) EcoReps Lunch and Learn: The creative art of waste minimization

    Sustainability requires creative thought and action. True recycling isn’t just a matter of putting your waste in a different bin, but of thinking differently about stuff in the first place. Join us Friday for a discussion about waste minimization and creative reuse with Charles Nasby who has been working to green theater arts! The Sustainability Council’s EcoReps program is designed to move all of us beyond talk to action for a more sustainable UofL! Free vegetarian lunch.

    18.) Radioactive material Thanksgiving ordering schedule

    From the Radiation Safety Office: The last day to order radioactive isotopes will be Friday, Nov. 21, for delivery on Monday, Nov. 24 or Tuesday, Nov. 25. Due to the university holiday schedule, we do not want to have any radioactive material trying to be delivered during closed hours. We will resume ordering Dec. 1.

    Charles Kodner, MD, UofL associate professor, will present Microvascular Angina. Dr. Kodner will describe the key clinical features, diagnosis and management of “Cardiac Syndrome X” or microvascular angina. He will describe a management strategy for patients with typical angina but a non-diagnostic cardiac evaluation.
