    UofL Today with Mark Hebert

    1.) Radio Show

    Airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 6 p.m. on 93.9 FM The Ville; replayed on Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m.

    UofL’s Mark Hebert hosts two weekly 30-minute programs focusing on research and insights from expert UofL faculty, as well as stories about our successful students, and staff and campus events. This week’s schedule:

    ·       Nov. 2: Dr. Rahul Bhola discusses glaucoma and vision problems in children; Dr. Lane Roland sorts out the confusing mammogram recommendations for women; history professor Daniel Krebs on how the wars in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan impact U.S. military history.  

    ·       Nov. 3: UofL’s War College Fellow Lt. Col. Thomas Russell-Tutty and 2009 Grawemeyer Award winner Michael Johnston discuss corruption in the U.S. and other governments.

    3.) UL Cares Campaign

    Through November 25

    The 2015 campaign runs through November 25 and is open to all faculty, staff and students.  Employees can give directly to five partners or to UofL through payroll deductions. One choice is Community Health Charities, which connects donors in the workplace with local health charities. Another is Kosair Charities, which has had a partnership with UofL for almost 90 years.

    4.) Make reservations for the Women’s Empowerment Luncheon

    Nov. 10, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., University Club

    $50 per person; $400 table of eight

    Reservations are being accepted through Wednesday for the annual Women’s Center Empowerment Luncheon. The speaker, Sadiqa N. Reynolds, president and CEO of the Louisville Urban League, will address the topic, Silence Is Deadly. The Tachau Gender Equity Award, Nichols Professional Development Award for graduate and professional school students and the Women’s Center Empowerment Award will also be presented.

    5.) Literary Generations and the Kibbutz Experiment

    Nov. 4, noon, University Club

    $15/person, $10/students

    Ranen Omer-Sherman, Endowed Chair of Judaic Studies, will discuss the kibbutz and its depiction in different genres. Numerous novels, short fiction, memoirs, and movies have portrayed the kibbutz as a crucial microcosm for understanding Israeli values and identity. The central drama explored in their works is the monumental tension between the individual and the collective, aspiration and ideological rigor, self-sacrifice and self-fulfillment, and between belonging and estrangement.

    IT now offers to the UofL community 2GB of free cloud-based storage on their new Syncplicity service. Faculty, staff and service accounts are available for this dropbox-like service. Paid accounts offer 100GB of storage. With Syncplicity, access your files from any device, collaborate and share folders or files, and organize your work within a secure environment.     8.) Interested in learning how to commercialize university research? UofL hosting regional conference to teach you how

    UofL’s Office of Tech Transfer, in conjunction with UK, Purdue, UC, OSU and several others – is excited to be hosting a Startup-Conference at the Seelbach Hotel. The event will teach attendees how to commercialize research through start-up formation. Mary Nan Mallory, MD, will deliver the keynote address highlighting her experience as a faculty entrepreneur. A reception and innovation showcase will be held Nov 9, with panel discussions and the keynote address taking place Nov 10.

    9.) 2015 (Fall) internal grants program deadline is Nov. 10

    The Office of the EVPRI is accepting applications for the NEW Internal Grants Program. The Internal Grants Program (Research I, Research II and URG) aims to assist faculty in new highly productive research projects. All grant categories are open to full-time faculty.     10.) American Bar Association Law Student Division Regional Arbitration Competition

    Nov. 20, 8:30 a.m., Allen Courtroom, Brandeis School of Law

    The Brandeis School of Law will host an ABA Law Student Division Regional Arbitration Competition Nov. 20-21. Law students will receive feedback from practicing bar members and arbitrators during the realistic arbitration hearing. Finals will be held Nov. 21, 1:30-5 p.m.
