    DID YOU KNOW?

     

    The popular Cards Under the Stars free summer movie series opens tonight on Belknap Campus with the sing-along version of “Frozen.” Thousands of children and adults alike have enjoyed the outdoor movies and activities since 2010, when the event began as an initiative of the Great Places to Work Campus Climate Committee and the Office of the President.

    Belknap Construction

    1.) Floyd and Warnock closed, bridges open this week on Belknap Campus

    Drivers will notice some significant changes on the east side of Belknap Campus June 1-5. The west side of the Warnock Avenue/Floyd Street intersection will be closed, and Warnock will be closed from Floyd to the railroad crossing. Meanwhile, the bridges to the new research park property will open, allowing access from Brook Street to Third Street near Iowa Avenue. See the construction website for more details.

    2.) Cards Under the Stars: The ‘Frozen’ sing-along is tonight!

    May 29, 6:30 p.m., on the lawn between the Natural Sciences Building and Grawemeyer Hall, movie begins at dusk

    Grab a blanket, lawn chairs and a cooler and bring the family for a fun-filled night of music with monster Disney hit “Frozen,” the sing-along version. Let the kids enjoy our inflatable park, play games and meet local mascots and special guests Anna and Elsa. Bring a picnic or purchase concessions from Sweet ‘N’ Savory food truck and Red Top Gourmet Hot Dogs. And don’t forget, Cards Under Stars returns June 26 with “Big Hero 6” and July 24 with a movie to be determined by campus-wide vote.

    3.) Lab Safety and Hazardous Waste Training

    June 2, 9 to 11 a.m., Room B-038, Delia Baxter II

    Recently hired lab employees who work with chemicals should attend this training. Recurrent training for lab employees is required every three years. Bring employee/student ID number to sign in. Attendees can pre-register at www.louisville.edu/dehs, but advanced registration is not required.

    4.) Book-in-Common Reading Circle meets Tuesdays in June

    Begins June 2, 9 to 10 a.m., Ekstrom Library, Delphi Center, 2nd floor

    Free for UofL faculty and staff

    Ideas to Action and the Office of First Year Initiatives are hosting a reading circle to read the UofL Book-in-Common, “This I Believe.” Please join us for this reading circle meeting Tuesday mornings in June. Starts June 2. We have copies of the book for those who commit to attending three sessions. Participants will read and discuss about 12 essays each week. Essays include Be Cool to the Pizza Dude and The 50% Theory of Life. Authors include Helen Keller, Martha Graham and Bill Gates.

    Summer Camps

    5.) Children of UofL employees receive discount to Cardinal Tennis Camps

    Four camps beginning June 8; 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Bass-Rudd Tennis Center

    $350 a week (several discounts available)

    Coach Rex Ecarma invites juniors aged 7 to 18 to his Cardinal Tennis Camps. Children of UofL employees receive a discount on the camp fee. There are four camps this summer June 8 – July 24. Overnight camp is July 19 – July 23. Also, a new Elite camp and new Adult camp are being offered this year!

    6.) New Directions in Public Art

    June 6, 11a.m., Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, 715 West Main St.

    Free for UofL faculty, staff and students

    John Hartfield, executive director of the Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City, Queens, N.Y., will discuss current public art initiatives. Hatfield was formerly deputy director of the New Museum of Contemporary Art. The lecture is co-sponsored by the Louisville Metro Government Public Art Initiative, the Committee on Public Art and the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft. COPA and KMAC are members of A&S’s Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships.

    Join us at either session for a Team-Based Learning (TBL) workshop. Featured speaker: Amy Holthouser, MD, associate dean for medical education. Her TBL course works to integrate the disciplines of pathology, microbiology and pharmacology with the clinical care of patients. She has developed and presented TBL faculty development seminars nationally and internationally.
