Did you know … Charles Wright, a University of Virginia professor emeritus in the English department’s Creative Writing Program, was named the 2014-2015 Poet Laureate of the United States last week. He goes to an isolated spot in Montana for three months—with no telephones or electricity—to write. 1.) Cards Under the Stars: It’s the ‘Frozen’ sing-along!
June 20, 6:30 p.m., on the lawn between the Natural Sciences Building and Grawemeyer Hall, movie begins at dusk
Grab a blanket, lawn chairs and a cooler and bring the family for a fun-filled night of music with monster Disney hit “Frozen,” the sing-along version. It all starts with a performance by Louisville recording artist Leigh Ann Yost. Let the kids enjoy our inflatable park, play games, meet local mascots and take special “Frozen” pictures in our photo area. Bring a picnic or purchase crepes, gelato or smoothies from the Sweet ‘N’ Savory food truck. The summer movie series is sponsored by UofL’s Great Places to Work Initiative and the Office of the President.

7.) Smart girl showcase highlights work of Digital Media Academy students

Mark your calendar for a showcase of digital media projects created by Louisville middle school girls who will spend two weeks “Designing Their Futures” through image manipulation and video editing. Sponsored by the English department and Liberal Studies, the Digital Media Academy will offer the technological means and girls from JCPS schools will provide the creativity and curiosity to engage in solving problems they think are important for their futures.

8.) Autism study for children 4 to less than 8 years old
The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate how a medication treats abnormal EEG’s without seizures, as well as behavioral and neurological symptoms, in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). If a child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will receive the study medication or placebo and study-related care at no cost. Parents will be offered compensation for time/travel. 9.) Pediatric high blood pressure study, 6 through 11 years
The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and dose response of an investigational drug used to treat high blood pressure. Children from 6 through 11 years of age diagnosed with high blood pressure may be eligible for participation. Subjects will be compensated for time/travel. IRB #10.0306

10.) Research study for nausea and vomiting after a scheduled surgery, birth through 17 years
The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and dose response of a drug given orally prior to a scheduled surgery that is used to prevent post-operative nausea and vomiting. Children from birth to 17 years of age may be eligible for participation. Subjects may be compensated for time/travel. IRB #12.0552

11.) Pain study, infants and toddlers, less than 2 years
The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate acetaminophen given into a vein to treat moderate to severe pain in infants and children less than 2 years of age following surgery or an injury. 12.) Adolescent fibromyalgia study, 12 to 17 years
The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication being studied as a possible treatment for fibromyalgia. Adolescents ages 12 to 17 years old who have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia may be eligible for participation. If a child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will attend seven clinic visits over a 17-week period. If qualified, child will receive the study medication or placebo (an inactive look-alike pill) and study-related care at no cost. Parents may be compensated for their time/travel. IRB # 10.0116

13.) Pediatric pain study, 7 through 16 years
The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety, pharmacokinetics and efficacy of an investigational drug used to treat moderate to severe prolonged or persistent pain. Children 7 to less than 17 years of age who require continuous analgesia for moderate to severe pain for an extended period of time may be eligible for participation. Patients will be reimbursed for reasonable travel costs associated with their participation in the study. IRB #12.0192
