    The Paul Weber Award for Departmental Excellence in Teaching, established in 2005, is named for Dr. Paul J. Weber, a distinguished UofL teacher, scholar and mentor who helped establish the McConnell Center for Political Leadership. Each year, one department is awarded up to $30,000.     UofL Today with Mark Hebert

    1.) New UofL radio show begins

    Airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 6 p.m. on 93.9 FM The Ville

    UofL’s Mark Hebert hosts two weekly 30-minute programs focusing on research and insights from expert UofL faculty, as well as stories about our successful students, and staff and campus events. This week’s schedule:

    ·       July 27: LaShawn Ford, Fulbright scholar, discusses overcoming personal obstacles to earn four UofL degrees and graduate with a 3.96 GPA; Dr. Andrea Behrman, head of UofL’s pediatric neurorecovery program, discusses research and rehab on children with paralyzing spinal cord injuries; and UofL football assistant coach Terrell Buckley discusses the importance of academics, campus improvements and student life to players, recruits and their families.

    ·       July 28: “Police and the Public,” a discussion with faculty members Ricky Jones and Deborah Keeling and Southern Police Institute director Cindy Shain.

    2.) HSC Town Hall rescheduled for Aug. 4

    Aug. 4, 2 p.m., HSC Auditorium

    The Town Hall at the Health Sciences Center has been rescheduled. The focus will be on the progress of the shared services project with discussion on the pilot program.  Everyone is welcome to attend. 

     

    3.) Fifth annual HSC Ice Cream Social is Thursday

    July 30, 2 to 4 p.m., HSC Plaza

    Yep, it’s still summer. Come out Thursday for some cool Comfy Cow ice cream on the plaza.

    4.) Sign up for UofL Event Calendar training

    The Office of Communications and Marketing launched in 2014 a university-wide event marketing calendar (http://events.louisville.edu) for use by the campus community. Join us for an informal refresher course on using the calendar. We’ll cover adding events to the calendar and answer any specific questions you might have.     6.) Intro to InCycle

    First Tuesday of each month 5:30 to 6 p.m., Get Healthy Now Wellness Center at Humana Gym

    Free for GHN Wellness Center members

    Whether you’re new to InCycle or simply brushing up on the technique, join our certified instructor to learn some quick tips for a successful ride. This introductory session will train you to set up your bike and learn the basic of indoor cycling. Gradually build up strength and stamina in a supportive environment in this monthly class. Great for beginners, all levels welcome!

    7.) Get Fit with GHN’s R.I.P.P.E.D!

    Mondays 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Get Healthy Now Wellness Center at Humana Gym

    Free for GHN Wellness Center members

    Get in shape with GHN’s R.I.P.P.E.D. group fitness class! This class is specifically designed to make you work hard and get you heated—in a good way! This high intensity class that uses a combination of free weight, body weight and resistance training will make you sweat. Summertime is the best time to “Get R.I.P.P.E.D” and ready for fun in the sun!

    9.) Microsoft Campus Agreement (MCA) enrollment deadline Friday

    Enroll in the MCA by Friday, July 31 to ensure departmental software and computers are licensed for 12 months through July 31, 2016. MCA provides access to Microsoft Windows, Office, free online Microsoft training and Office at home through the Microsoft Home Use program for employees whose departments participate in MCA.     10.) Speed Museum/Strickler Hall drive lane closed Friday

    The drive lane between the Speed Museum Garage and Strickler Hall will be closed on Friday, July 31 due to construction work. The area will have additional construction for 2-3 days but the drive lane will be available. Please use caution in this area.

    12.) Poster session of summer undergraduate research is Thursday

    July 30, Noon-3 p.m. Kosair Charities CTRB Lobby, HSC 

    Undergraduate students will present the results from their 10-week summer research experience. Participants in the Biology REU, Cancer Education R25, KBRIN, Physiology Cardiovascular, SROP, Cancer Center High School students, and students supported by Faculty Grants, will present.     13.) Nucleus offering LaunchIT training program for entrepreneurs

    Application due Aug 14; program Thursdays from Sept. 3 to Nov. 5, 6 to 9 p.m.

    Designed for researchers interested in having their innovations reach consumers through licensing to an existing company or through a startup, LaunchIt will provide framework to critically evaluate commercial potential of innovative products, services and the path to successfully reach the consumer. The EVPRI is offering a competitive opportunity to provide partial tuition reimbursement to UofL faculty/staff/students who successfully complete the program. Applications due Aug 14.

    The University Club is hosting an Autumn Bridal Show Sunday, Sept. 27 from noon to 4 p.m. Visit with the area’s premier wedding vendors, gather ideas for your special day and enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres.
