    It’s not too late to register to attend the 2016 Celebration of Teaching and Learning. This year’s conference will feature a keynote presentation by Dr. José Antonio Bowen, author of “Teaching Naked: How Moving Technology Out of Your Classroom Will Improve Student Learning,” as well as concurrent sessions led by your faculty colleagues. The 2015-16 Paul Weber Award for Departmental Excellence in Teaching winner will be announced and the 2014-15 Faculty Favorites will be recognized during lunch.

    2.) Join the Million Hearts initiative

    Month of February

    February is American Heart Month. UofL’s Get Healthy Now wellness challenges you to join the Million Hearts initiative and help prevent one million heart attacks and strokes by 2017.  To participate, complete three online educational modules designed to empower you to improve your own cardiovascular health and help you educate others on how best to live a heart healthy life. Go to: go.osu.edu/millionhearts and select “BHAC Million Hearts Challenge.” Bring certificates of completion to the GHN Wellness Center by 2/29 and claim your prize.

    3.) Zika Virus health alert issued for international travelers 

    Zika Virus is spreading through the Americas and the Caribbean at an “explosive” rate, according to the World Health Organization. University travelers to affected countries should be aware of risks and protective measures. If you are traveling to these areas for study abroad or university business, you will be required to complete a Zika Virus Assumption of Risk form. For more information, click here.

    4.) Watch UofL Today on ‘Great Day Live’

    Dr. George Pantalos’ astrosurgery research was featured this week on WHAS-TV’s Great Day Live. UofL’s Mark Hebert is appearing each Monday morning and showcasing UofL research, students, programs and events.

     

    5.) Come to a medical technology demonstration

    The Paris Simulation Center evaluates new medical simulation technology to make sure that the most current and useful products are available at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. On February 4, the Paris Simulation Center will examine “ABSIM: The world’s first abdominal medical simulator with tactile, visual, and audio feedback.” Hands-on training using the ABSIM simulator will be available.

    6.) UofL funding opportunities for product development and research commercialization

    Feb. 29 pre-application deadline

    Do you have an idea for a product that could improve patient care or enhance human health? If so, we want to hear from you. Funded by the NIH, the UofL ExCITE hub offers proof-of-concept grants for all types of health-related ideas. Grants are for a maximum of $200,000 per project and we expect to fund 5–10 projects per year. All UofL faculty, staff, trainees and students are eligible to apply. A two-page pre-application is required by February 29. Questions and informal inquiries are welcome.

    Due to an overwhelming number of applications received, funding for the CODRE Diversity Programming is no longer available, effective 1/25/2016. Diversity Programming will begin accepting applications for funding for the Fall Semester 2016 effective July 1, 2016.

    10.) Green Tip: Get in on the relaunch of UofL’s Sustainability Scholars Roundtable

    In 2016, UofL’s Sustainability Council is relaunching the Sustainability Scholars Roundtable with a focus on bringing researchers together around potential interdisciplinary grants that we could pursue through collaborative proposals. We’ll gather monthly (on 2/5, 3/4, 4/8) to share ideas about potential grants, decide upon common areas of interest, and explore local sustainability challenges that could be addressed through our research efforts. Researchers from all disciplines welcome.

    11.) Meet the Professor: Deborah Lutz

    Feb. 4, noon, University Club

    $15/person and $10/students

    Deborah Lutz, Thruston B. Morton Professor of English, will speak on Literary Relics: Charlotte Brontë’s Hair, Percy B. Shelley’s Skull, and Emily Brontë’s Black Sofa. She has written widely on the Brontës, material culture, Victorian eroticism, pornography, death culture and collecting. What sort of life or meaning can one find in objects that belonged to the dead? How were these objects treated in 19th century Britain, especially when they had been the personal possessions of famous literary figures? In her talk, Dr. Lutz will explore these questions and look at slides of well-known relics.

    Studies

    15.) Participants needed for tobacco study- IRB # 13.0590

    UL’s School of Medicine is conducting a study on the effects of tobacco exposure in healthy young adults (21-45 years of age). The study is recruiting healthy unmedicated tobacco and e-cigarette user participants. The study will be one visit that will last approximately 2-hours and include questionnaires on your social history, health, tobacco use patterns, blood and urine collection, and other measures to give us an idea of your heart health. Participant compensation will be as a gift card.
