2.) Roman Yampolskiy
In our third and final installment of the top 2013-2014 Faculty Favorites nominees, meet Roman Yampolskiy, a computer engineering/computer science professor in the J.B. Speed School of Engineering. Watch this video of Professor Yampolskiy, and look for a story on the upcoming Faculty Favorites reception Feb. 6. Yampolskiy was described as “awesome,” “fantastic,” “approachable” and “flexible.” One student said, “His class makes me want to explore technological communications even further.”

3.) ‘Double V’ free for UofL faculty, staff, students

Free for UofL faculty, staff and students
The Filson Historical Society and the Muhammad Ali Center co-present “Double V,” a 25- minute play by Larry Muhammad based on the career of Louisville Defender publisher Frank Stanley. The play will preceded by a short talk by Muhammad about the history of the American black press. The Filson and the Ali Center are both part of A&S’s Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships.

4.) Billy Reed presents a celebration of Black History Month

UofL Conversations with Champions and Hall of Fame journalist Billy Reed present, A Celebration of Black History Month, featuring special guests Wade Houston, first African-American basketball player to earn a scholarship at UofL; Tim Sullivan, Courier Journal sports columnist; and Kendrick Haskins, WAVE3. 5.) A&S lunch and lecture series presents talk on Vladimir Putin

The College of Arts & Sciences presents the lunch and lecture series Meet the Professor. Charles Ziegler, professor of political science and distinguished university scholar, will discuss the political developments in Russia and the man behind them. Putin seems determined to create a 21st century version of the old Russian empire. Annexing Crimea may be just the start of a more confrontational foreign policy. Learn whether a second Cold War is inevitable, and find out what motivates Mr. Putin.

The UofL Kentucky Author Forum will feature David Boies, author of “Redeeming the Dream: The Case for Marriage Equality.” Boies, who was co-lead counsel for the plaintiffs in Perry v. Brown, establishing the constitutional right to marry for gay and lesbian citizens in California, will be interviewed by CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin. 7.) 4th Annual Old Louisville SpringFest dates announced
The 4th Annual Old Louisville SpringFest will be held May 15, 4 to 9 p.m., and May 16, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Festivities will be held on 1st Street between Oak and Magnolia streets. The popular event features local vendors and artists, food trucks, cocktails and activities for children (Saturday).

8.) Save the Date: A Conversation on Diversity with Derek Greenfield
Feb. 17-18
Join UofL Athletics and the Cultural Center for a discussion on diversity and inclusion. Guest presenter Derek Greenfield is a diversity consultant and former faculty member, familiar with all aspects of the university experience. There will be a series of events hosted on February 17 and 18 that give will faculty, staff and students the opportunity to engage in a dialogue on diversity, inclusion and leadership.

10.) IT issues warning about a tax fraud email
Information Technology has received reports regarding a tax fraud email sent to university account holders. If you receive an email with the subject “You have received new messages from HMRC” delete it immediately. Do not open the email or the attachment. If the attachment is opened, contact your tier one. When you receive a suspicious email, send it as an attachment to helpdesk@louisville.edu to confirm its legitimacy prior to responding.

11.) Ulink will be unavailable Wednesday night
Due to a software tools upgrade, Ulink will be unavailable on Wednesday, Feb. 4, between 6 and 11 p.m. This upgrade is being completed outside the normal preventative maintenance period to enable follow-up with the vendor the next business day. 12.) 2015 Celebration of Teaching and Learning to be held Friday
Feb. 6, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Founders Union, Shelby Campus
There is still time to register for the 2015 Celebration of Teaching and Learning. The free, daylong conference is centered around “Cornerstones for Teaching Excellence: Building Powerful Learning Experiences with Students” and will feature a keynote presentation by Linda Nilson as well as breakout sessions by UofL colleagues. Faculty members are welcome to attend for a half-day or the whole conference.

13.) Delphi Center invites grad students to Celebration of Teaching and Learning

15.) PLAN offers workshop on peer mentoring for recruitment
Feb. 5, 2 to 3 p.m., Houchens Building, Room 105
In early spring, many programs accept and recruit new students. This workshop addresses the needs of programs and students during this process by discussing the benefits of peer mentoring, such as fostering relationships between current and prospective students. The workshop, for both students and faculty/staff, will also discuss how departments can use recruitment to start a peer mentoring program. 16.) Green Tip: Catch RecycleMania!
UofL is competing against schools across the country to see which can reduce waste and recycle the most throughout February and March. You can help the Cards to victory by: 1) Avoiding disposable items as much as possible – bring your own mug, bottle, bag, etc.; and 2) Making sure you always recycle, which is amazingly easy at UofL. All types of plastic, paper, cardboard, metal and glass go into the same single-stream recycling bins all over campus. Don’t worry how clean it is, just recycle it.

The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit and the Wendy L. Novak Diabetes Care Center are conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety of an experimental medication in 12 to 35 year olds who have recently been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. If the subject qualifies to take part in this research study, participation lasts up to 2 years; he/she will receive the study medication or a placebo and study-related care at no cost . Novak Diabetes Care Center are conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the metabolism, as well as safety, of a medication in children and adolescents aged 10 to 17 years old who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. If the child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will attend 3 clinic visits; receive the study medication and study-related care at no cost. Compensation available for time/travel.

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate how a medication treats abnormal EEG’s without seizures, as well as behavioral and neurological symptoms, in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). If a child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will receive the study medication or placebo and study-related care at no cost. Parents will be offered compensation for time/travel.

21.) Research study for nausea and vomiting after a scheduled surgery, birth through 17 years

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and dose response of a drug given orally prior to a scheduled surgery that is used to prevent post-operative nausea and vomiting. Children from birth to 17 years of age may be eligible for participation. Subjects may be compensated for time/travel.

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety, pharmacokinetics and efficacy of an investigational drug used to treat moderate to severe prolonged or persistent pain. Children 7 to less than 17 years of age who require continuous analgesia for moderate to severe pain for an extended period of time may be eligible for participation. Patients will be reimbursed for reasonable travel costs associated with their participation in the study.

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit is conducting a clinical research study to assess the efficacy and safety of an investigational drug used to treat constipation. Children 6-17 years of age who have been diagnosed with functional constipation and are able to swallow capsules may be eligible to participate.
