    1.) Surplus warehouse closing for auction preparations

    Aug. 7, 1901 S. Floyd St.

    The Surplus Warehouse at 1901 S. Floyd St. will be open for viewing and reserving surplus items for department use on August 6, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. We request that all items reserved be removed as soon as possible. The Surplus Warehouse will then close on August 7 to prepare for the next auction scheduled for Saturday, August 23, 2014. The initial auction list will be posted on the Surplus website by August 4.

    2.) Belknap campus mammogram screening set for Sept. 26

    Sept. 26, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Gottschalk Circle next to Shumaker Research Building

    Insurance will be billed. UofL insurance covers 100 percent.

    Is it time for your annual mammogram? If so, you’re in luck. UofL’s Kentucky Cancer Program is pleased to bring the mobile mammography van back to Belknap Campus for women 40 years old and over. Mammograms will be provided by UofL Hospital and the James Graham Brown Cancer Center. UofL Women’s Center will also be on site with information. UofL insurance will cover 100 percent of the cost.     3.) Grant Crafting Brown Bag Series continues

    Aug. 14, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., College of Education and Human Development, Room 239 Free

    Join us for a presentation by Terry Scott, professor in the College of Education and Human Development. He will talk about the differences among goals, objectives and outcomes, and how you should approach them in your grant writing. The presentation will last approximately 45 minutes, with time afterwards for questions and discussion. Please feel free to bring your lunch.

    4.) See ‘The Incredible Journey of the Butterflies’

    Aug. 10, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium

    The planetarium is joining the celebration of the monarch with a free screening of the PBS program The Incredible Journey of the Butterflies, in which NOVA flies across the continent with the monarchs providing incredibly stunning details about the scientific marvel we call the monarch. The planetarium is also offering a special discounted rate for public show admission on August 10—just $5 per person—so be sure to arrive early and see one of our planetarium shows!

    5.) Former astronaut Barbara Morgan to speak at Gheens

    Aug. 11, 5:30 to 8 p.m., Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium

    In addition to the presentation by NASA’s first educator astronaut, Barbara Morgan, this exciting evening features recognition of The Academy @ Shawnee’s Student Space Flight Experiment Team, Challenger Center Legacy Awards and a silent auction. It also includes heavy hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. Proceeds from the event will be used to promote STEM education. Space is limited; register here.

    6.) Research!Louisville: call for abstracts

    Abstract submissions due by August 29

    Research!Louisville will be held Sept. 16 to 19 in the Kosair Charities Clinical and Translational Research Building. Faculty, post-docs, research associates, residents, clinical fellows, research staff, graduate and professional students are invited to submit an abstract on their life science research for a poster presentation at Research!Louisville.     8.) Movement Disorders Video Rounds: phenomenology of tremor and video discussions

    Aug. 6, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Frazier Rehabilitation and Neuroscience Center, 15th floor boardroom

    Monthly conference with didactics on movement disorder phenomenology and discussion of patient cases. Attendants are encouraged to bring videos of patients for discussion. These can be sent to Dr. LaFaver in advance at Kathrin.LaFaver@louisville.edu or brought to the video rounds on a flashdrive.
