Discussion series introduces leaders, updates on schools

    LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Guests will hear the viewpoints of newly appointed leaders and the outlook for local public schools as the University of Louisville-Yearlings Club series launches its fall discussion series.

    The UofL College of Arts and Sciences’ international, diversity and engagement programs office is offering the free, public talks in partnership with the Yearlings at the civic club’s 4309 W. Broadway location. The series seeks to bring faculty members and the public together to share expertise, discuss issues and forge common bonds.

    The events usually run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. monthly on Sundays from September through April, although the opening event will be 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24.

    The fall events are:

    Sept. 24 – “Community Reception and Conversation with Theresa Rajack-Talley,” the college’s new associate dean for international, diversity and engagement programs. Discussion moderated by author and retired Courier-Journal columnist Betty Baye. (6 p.m.-7:30 p.m.)

    Oct. 25 – “Meet Sadiqa Reynolds, Louisville Urban League President and CEO,” the first woman to lead the local civil rights organization. Discussion moderated by Ricky Jones, Pan-African studies chair. (4 p.m.-6 p.m.)

    Nov. 15 – “Jefferson County Public Schools Report Card: An Update on New Initiatives for the 2015-16 Term.” Superintendent Donna Hargens and Diane Porter, Jefferson County Board of Education vice chair, will talk about issues including test scores, minority teacher recruitment and restorative justice programs. (4 p.m.-6 p.m.)

    Dec. 13 – “Community Holiday Reception,” offering live music and refreshments. (4 p.m.-6 p.m.)

    The Yearlings Club Inc. was established in 1951 and its members include representatives from corporate, government and private organizations. The club is devoted to promoting civic responsibility, community service and leadership development.
