LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A dance troupe that integrates various styles of dance into its performances will present “Metamorphosis: Fantasy or Reality” at the University of Louisville at 7:30 p.m. April 5 and 6 at the Thrust Theater, 2314 S. Floyd St.

The Eclectic Dance Company at Alabama State University explores how dance and movement can create energy. Its performances are choreographed by students and faculty. Since the group’s creation in 2001 members have gone on to perform in Broadway productions such as “The Color Purple” and “The Lion King.”

UofL’s African American Theatre Program (AATP) is sponsoring the group’s visit. AATP alumnus Brian Martin, a theater professor at Alabama State University, is the show’s director.

“The energy in this group’s performance comes from an intense passion for dance,– said Deana Thomas, AATP director. “Their fast-paced rhythms are combined with slow, lyrical movements to showcase their diverse styles and creativity.”

The event is part of a kickoff celebration to mark the 20th anniversary season for the AATP.

Launched in 1993, AATP has produced nine premieres, performed in South Africa and China and had multiple appearances in the U.S. UofL’s AATP is the nation’s only university African American program fully integrated into the theater arts curriculum and offering a graduate certificate in African American theater.

Ticket sales for “Metamorphosis: Fantasy or Reality” will help raise funds for AATP and are $10 per person. A ticket purchase includes a free dance workshop given by the troupe’s members from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. April 6 for youths 7 to 18.
