LOUISVILLE, Ky. – African American youth issues will be the main focus of the University of Louisville-Yearlings Club spring discussion series, which concludes in April with the presentation of community service awards.

The College of Arts and Sciences’ international, diversity and engagement programs offer the free, public talks in partnership with the Yearlings Club at its 4309 W. Broadway location. The series seeks to bring faculty members and the public together to share expertise, discuss issues and forge common bonds. The “Saving Our Youth” events will continue discussions that began last fall.

Events usually run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. monthly on Sundays from September through April, although the April community reception will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 14.

    The spring events are:

Jan. 18 — “Saving Our Youth IV: Fourth Street Live’s Policies and Practices and Its Relationship to African Americans and Urban Youth,” panel discussion of the role young African Americans may play in ensuring a diverse environment and business opportunities for minorities in downtown’s revitalization (4 p.m.-6 p.m.).

Feb. 15 — “Saving Our Youth V: Is JCPS Meeting the Needs of Our Youth?” panel discussion about Jefferson County Public Schools, the school reform movement’s impact, new education programs and alternatives to public education (4 p.m.-6 p.m.).

April 14 — “Community Reception and Community Spirit Awards,” 12th annual celebration plus presentation of Community Spirit Awards to distinguished citizens (6 p.m.-8 p.m.).
