LOUISVILLE, Ky.–Why are there giant sunflowers behind the University of Louisville’s Urban Studies Institute at 426 W. Bloom St.?
Department of Urban and Public Affairs volunteers planted them in a months-long effort to turn an empty 4,000-square-foot area on UofL’s Belknap Campus into green space. The area, known as a horticultural zone, also has a vegetable garden, clover pasture, rain barrels and compost bins.
Faculty, staff and students who worked on the project will hand out seeds from the sunflowers at a ceremony dedicating the site Oct. 23 at 4:30 p.m. The event is one of several taking place during UofL Sustainability Week, Oct. 21-29.
Other activities include:
- Where’s the Beef?!, a mini-farmer’s market at the Red Barn Oct. 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. promoting the benefits of eating less meat
- An Arbor Day tree planting and pruning workshop starting at noon Oct. 22 at the Swain Student Activities Center clock tower
- A sustainability fair with booths and free paper, computer disk and videotape shredding and recycling Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Belknap Humanities Quad
- A free store in Unitas Hall open Oct. 25 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. where people can drop off donations or leave with free items
- An Oct. 26 cleanup and trash recycling event in the West End starting at 10 a.m. at The Mammoth, 744 S. 13th St., and ending at noon
UofL’s Sustainability Council, an advisory body made up of faculty, staff and students that provides guidance in all things green at the university, sponsors the week each year.
