UofL challenged students to engage in community service in King’s honor. They met that challenge by, among other things, sorting donations, mentoring children and painting and repairing facilities at such organizations as the Americana Community Center, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana, Brooklawn Child and Family Services, Christian Care Communities, Family Scholar House, Ronald McDonald House, Dare to Care, Salvation Army Center for Hope and Brickhouse Community Center.
Everything went great. It was an awesome experience, said Amanda Romito, an Americorps Vista volunteer in the Office of Civic Engagement, Leadership, and Service. Romito, who organized the event, said the number of participating students doubled from last year.
The event kicked off at 10:30 a.m. at the Baptist Campus Ministry where participants received lunch from Puccini’s restaurant and a T-shirt. Students also heard an address from Carl Brazley, a former National Football League player and Louisville business owner.
Service projects took place between 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
