Author Shachar Pinsker, University of Michigan associate professor of Hebrew literature and culture, will give the first Jewish Heritage Fund for Excellence Lecture at 2 p.m., and a 3:30 p.m. reception will feature live music. The downtown events will be at UofL’s Cressman Center for Visual Arts, 100 E. Main St.

Pinsker will talk about how the café culture of Odessa, Vienna, Tel Aviv and other cities shaped Jewish arts and ideas of the early 20th century. His book “Literary Passports: The Making of Modernist Hebrew Fiction in Europe” won a Jordan Schnitzer Award from the Association for Jewish Studies in 2011.
