The free symposium, which will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Rudd Heart and Lung Center, offers an overview of new advancements and treatments in Parkinson’s disease, as well as research. It also provides an opportunity to pose questions to experts on the disease.
This year’s symposium will feature talks on new therapies, research into gut bacteria related to Parkinson’s and on frameless stereotactic DBS surgery, a targeted brain surgery to help Parkinson’s symptoms. DBS (deep brain stimulation) has been shown to be a safe and effective method of treatment.
Traditionally, frame-based stereotactic surgery has been the standard technique, but frameless stereotactic has been developed and is a more comfortable option for patients.
Breakout sessions will be held on expectations of DBS surgery and how to improve Parkinson’s with exercise.
Speakers include:
- Dr. Robert Friedland, a UofL Physicians neurologist and professor at the UofL School of Medicine
- Dr. Kathrin LaFaver, a UofL Physicians neurologist and movement disorders specialist and assistant professor at the UofL School of Medicine
- Dr. Amr El-Naggar, a UofL Physicians neurosurgeon and professor at the UofL School of Medicine
- Movement disorders nurse practitioner Colleen Knoop with UofL Physicians, who is experienced in caring for DBS patients
- Kathy Paper, a physical therapist with Frazier Rehab Institute who specializes in neurological rehabilitation
The symposium will be held at the Rudd Heart and Lung Center’s Conference Center, 201 Abraham Flexner Way.
