“Get on the Bus: The Path Toward Equal Housing Opportunity” will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, 1701 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd.
The opening program at the center will include a community history presentation and the release of a 20-year action plan for fair housing. UofL’s Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research developed the plan with the Metropolitan Housing Coalition and Louisville Metro Human Relations Commission through a U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant. The bus tour will run 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
UofL professors Cate Fosl, Braden Institute director, and Tracy K’Meyer, history department chair, will be among the tour guides. They also will help develop the route to show how the history of segregation contributed to current problems. The ride will include stops on the self-guided tour of Louisville’s civil rights history, a brochure the institute developed with other community partners.

Organizers expect the event to attract activists, business and housing development officials, students, civic leaders and others who advocate for fair and affordable housing.
A part of National Fair Housing Month, this is the first Louisville “Get on the Bus” event; previous bus tours since 2010 have been in Frankfort, Lexington and northern Kentucky. Event sponsors are HUD, Lexington Fair Housing Council, Kentucky Housing Corp., Louisville Metro Human Relations Commission, Louisville Urban League, Metropolitan Housing Coalition and the Braden Institute.
