UofL’s College of Arts and Sciences and the Yearlings Club organize the annual free, public events aimed at bringing people in Louisville together with UofL faculty members to explore issues, share expertise and forge common bonds. The club is devoted to civic responsibility, community service and leadership development.
All events run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month at the Yearlings Club, 4309 W. Broadway, and include refreshments and networking opportunities.
The fall series includes:
- Oct. 9: “The West Louisville Math and Science Project,” panelists Eboni Neal Cochran, project founder and director; Robin Muhammad, board member and founder of ANISA (A Nubian Inspired Sistahood for Action); and Kesha Shahid, advisory team member, will discuss family activities that encourage appreciation of and a fun approach to science and math education.
- Nov. 13: “Socially Conscientious: The Vibe of Today’s Youth,” young artists Cassandra C’olon, artist promoter; “Chizz,” poet; DeAldon Watson, writer and disc jockey; and Hanna Drake, poet and author, will discuss how they have chosen to follow those who use art to uplift others and build the community in positive ways. In a tribute, they will highlight how their approach to verse and music retains the philosophy of artists such as The Last Poets, a poets and musicians group, and Gil Scott-Heron, a poet and performer whose musical mix of jazz, blues and soul influenced later styles including hip-hop.
- Dec. 11: “Holiday-Kwanzaa Jazz Event: Party with a Purpose,” featuring Sheryl Rouse and Company.
