Students will be hosts to a luncheon and to a prayer walk to demonstrate their support and thoughts for Haitians, while a university center will collect money at three different times and locations.

Hearts for Haiti

Hearts for Haiti, a luncheon with proceeds benefiting the American Red Cross and Christian Flights International, will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 11, at the Red Barn. Tickets for the event are $5 at the door or $4 in advance. Advance tickets can be purchased at the Dean of Students’ office in the Student Activities Center on Belknap Campus and at REACH in Strickler Hall.

The Hearts event will include lunch provided by the Student Activities Board (SAB) and the chance to see photos of Haiti before and after the earthquake. Representatives from the American Red Cross and Christian Flights International will speak.

Winchester, Ky., senior Katie Trimble came up with the event idea. She has visited Haiti three times, including a trip last summer to help organize a Christian Flights International pilot program to assist widows and children. Money raised Feb. 11 will help fund that program.

Haiti needed help before the earthquake, and the devastation since then calls for more help, Trimble said.

On a good day, Haiti is in desperation, she said. This broke my heart when I saw what happened.

Trimble worked with several groups, including the Office of Civic Engagement, Leadership and Service, SAB and Student Government Association, to plan Hearts for Haiti.

Prayer Walk

The campus ministry group Conquerors through Christ has organized a campus-wide prayer walk for Haiti later in the day Feb. 11. The event is not a fundraiser, but instead is an effort to show support for Haitians.

Participants should meet at 4 p.m. in the Red Barn on Belknap Campus for a 30-minute prayer service. The walk will start at about 4:30 p.m. It will proceed from the Red Barn through the interior of campus and return to the Red Barn.

This is a chance for people who may not be able to make financial donations to Haiti to demonstrate their concern and support for the people there, said Fort Knox, Ky., senior Rosalynne Duff, who is among its organizers.

We felt like we wanted to support our Haitian brothers and sisters in a way that would be effective, Duff said.

Women’s Center fundraisers

The Women’s Center will be host to three fundraisers, with proceeds benefitting the Red Cross. The first is Wednesday, Feb. 10, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the Student Activities Center. On Friday, Feb. 12, the group will be in Ekstrom Library from noon to 5 p.m., and it will be in the Kornhauser Library lobby Wednesday, Feb. 17, also from noon to 5 p.m. Donations can be by check or cash. Checks should be made payable to the Red Cross; tax-exempt receipts will be available for people who give cash. For more information, e-mail Mee Ri Lee
