“Today we celebrate 25 individuals who have earned some of the most competitive academic awards in the world,” said UofL President James Ramsey.

Eight of those scholarships were through the U.S. Student Fulbright Program, which the U.S. Department of State funds (see story). The remainder include the

  • David L. Boren Scholarship, a National Security Education Program-funded award that focuses on geographic areas, languages and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security
  • Benjamin I. Gilman Scholarship, which the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State sponsors
  • U.S. State Department-funded Critical Language Scholarship
  • Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, which supports undergraduate college students who show exceptional promise in sciene, mathematics and engineering
  • Fulbright Summer Institute, a US-UK Fulbright Commission program and the only bilateral, transatlantic scholarship program for study or research in any field at any accredited U.S. or UK university.

Mallory Cox

Mallory Cox

David L. Boren Scholarship to Russia
Cox will go to Russia in the fall and is studying intensive Russian language this summer at California State University, Northridge, through a competitive grant. She is majoring in anthropology at the College of Arts and Sciences. Cox is from Smyrna, Tenn., and graduated from LaVergne High School in Rutherford County, Tenn.

David L. Boren Fellowship to Korea
Hartsell will spend the 2012-2013 academic year in Seoul studying intensive Korean language and trade law and policy between the United States and Korea. He is a law student at the Brandeis School of Law. Hartsell is from Conover, N.C., and holds a political science degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

David L. Boren Scholarship to Brazil
Neblett will study Portuguese in Brazil. He is a finance major at the College of Business. Neblett is from Russellville, Ky., and graduated from Russellville High School.

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship to Costa Rica
Girton received a summer Gilman scholarship to Costa Rica. In the fall, she will study in Buenos Aires, Argentina, through a UofL World Scholars Award and a Modern Languages Endowment. She has a double major: music therapy at the School of Music, and Spanish at the College of Arts and Sciences. Girton is from Louisville and graduated from duPont Manual High School via the Youth Performing Arts School.

Stephanie Hodge

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to Qatar
Hodge will spend a full academic year studying Arabic in Doha, Qatar. She is a cultural anthropology major at the College of Arts and Sciences. Hodge is from Louisville and graduated from Waggener Traditional High School.

Ashley Key

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship to Taiwan
Key spent the past semester in Taiwan. She is a political science major in the College of Arts and Sciences and an economics major in the College of Business. Key is from Louisville and graduated from Iroquois High School.

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship and a Critical Need Language Supplement to Jordan
Mitchell will spend the summer in Jordan. She is a psychology major at the College of Arts and Sciences. Mitchell is from Louisville and graduated from duPont Manual High School.

Melissa Moody

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to Nicaragua
Moody will go to Leon, Nicaragua, this fall to work with La Isla Foundation as a multimedia producer creating video, photo essays and stories about the nonprofit organization’s work to assist marginalized communities. She is a communication major at the College of Arts and Sciences. Moody is from Louisville and graduated from duPont Manual High School.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to Japan
Perry, a participant in the UofL International Center’s Kansai Gaidai Yearlong Exchange program, will study the Japanese language, take English lecture courses focused on cultural exchange at Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka and write his third book of poetry. He is an English major at the College of Arts and Sciences. Perry is from Louisville and graduated from Eastern High School.

Virginia Alexander

Critical Language Scholarship
Alexander will study advanced Arabic language in a country to be assigned later. She is an anthropology major at the College of Arts and Sciences. Alexander is from Louisville and attended Atherton High School.

Critical Language Scholarship to Azerbaijan
McChane will be based this summer in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the College of Business. McChane is from Louisville and graduated from duPont Manual High School.

Critical Language Scholarship to China
Sevy will spend the summer studying Mandarin in China. He is an accounting major at the College of Business. Sevy is from Midway, Ky., and was home-schooled.

Leslie Burress

French Government Teaching Assistantship to France
Burress will teach English in Dijon, France. She is a graduate student studying French literature and language at the College of Arts and Sciences. Burress is from Louisville and holds bachelor’s degrees in anthropology and French language from UofL.

English Speaking Union Scholarship to England
Sheehy will study English literature this summer at the University of Cambridge. She is an English major at the College of Arts and Sciences and an exercise science major at the College of Education. Sheehy graduated from Larry A. Ryle High School in Union, Ky.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
McClure will receive up to $7,500 for education-related expenses that may include research, tuition, books, fees and housing costs. This summer, he will conduct research in computational sensing and medical robotics at Johns Hopkins University. He is a bioengineering major in the J.B. Speed School of Engineering. McClure is from Corbin, Ky., and was home-schooled.

United Kingdom Fulbright Summer Institute to Wales
Rawlings will study the effects that industry, politics, culture and change have had on modern Wales this summer at Cardiff, Bangor and Aberystwyth universities. She is a pre-med student majoring in biology major at the College of arts and Sciences. Rawlings is from Alexandria, Ky., and graduated from Campbell County High School.

Brittany Bush

UofL Mary Churchill Humphrey Memorial Scholarship
Bush, a published writer, plans to attend the University of Liverpool’s master’s degree program in science fiction studies during the 2013–2014 academic year. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the College of Arts and Sciences and will enter UofL’s Master of Arts program in English in the fall. Bush is from Shepherdsville, Ky., and attended North Bullitt (County) High School.
