Men’s and women’s flag football teams from the School of Dentistry met their counterparts from the University of Kentucky Sept. 25 on the Belknap Campus intramural field for high-spirited competition.

The women’s team extended its five-year winning streak with a 22-0 score. Offensive leaders were fourth-year captain Katie Skahan, who had two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown, and Allison Henley, who had one touchdown and two point-after-touchdown catches.

Fourth-year captains Jennifer Dillon and Sarah Canty Cannon led the defense with a combined 15 tackles (five for a loss). Carl Gioia coached the women’s offense, while Jay Ruark coached the defense.

The men’s team saw its first victory since 2003.

Senior captain Jay Ruark (four touchdown passes), and fourth-year students Jay Mercke, Matt Wiggs and Nick Kochenour led the offense in the 33-0 win. Captain Carl Gioia (one interception) and fourth-year students Melvin Washington and Jay Mercke led the defense.

Both UofL teams won after the Mercy Rule was imposed.

Dean John Sauk walked the sidelines and with the team accepted the trophy balls.

The annual event alternates between Louisville and Lexington and dates back more than a decade.
