    1.) Lab Safety and Hazardous Waste training with Radiation Safety Orientation

    (Note location change) September 8, 9 a.m. to noon, K-Wing, room 2034, HSC Campus; Free

    Recently hired lab employees who work with chemicals should attend the Lab Safety/Hazardous Waste session, 9 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Recurrent training for lab employees is required every three years and may be completed in BioRAFT (online refresher training). Individuals who will work with or around radioactive materials should attend the Radiation Safety Orientation session, which is from 11:15 a.m. to noon. Bring employee/student ID number to sign in.

    2.) PLAN workshop for GTAs on active learning, productive discussion strategies

    September 12, 1-2 p.m., Room 105, Houchens Building, Belknap Campus

    Do you have a difficult time engaging your students? Ensuring the active learning of students in your class can be an ambiguous effort at best, and off-hand attempts at guiding discussion can feel unproductive. In this session, we will review what you really need to know about active learning, and how to effectively and efficiently engage your students through productive discussion and other strategies.     5.) Banned Books Week celebrations planned

    Help us celebrate Banned Books Week at the Digital Media Suite (DMS) in Ekstrom Library. Faculty, students, and staff are welcome to stop by the DMS to record their thoughts on their favorite “banned” or challenged book.     6.) Brats, burgers on the menu at UofL Police Department student cookout

    Sept. 12, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Floyd Street garage plaza, between the police station and Commonwealth Credit Union

    The UofL Police Department will fire up the grill to feed students, faculty and staff Monday, Sept. 12, at the department’s annual Student Cookout. The free event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. In addition to free brats, burgers and sides, the event will feature music and door prizes.

    10.) “Digital Mapping as Humanities Practice,” by Mark Olson, Duke University

    September 15, 4 p.m., Humanities Room 100

    Digital mapping is a powerful and popular toolkit in digital humanities. In this talk, Mark Olson will introduce a range of techniques and technologies that reflect the current state of the art. What kinds of humanities questions to these tools enable and sustain? What are their limits? Drawing on visual and media studies, he will conclude by inviting discussion on some of the epistemological implications of mapping-as-method.

    Did you know that UofL has on-campus organic gardens and a greenhouse where you can experience the thrill of turning tiny seeds into an abundance of fresh, free, hyper-local food year-round? Staff and students are always welcome to get involved and faculty can use the gardens as a teaching tool or research space for sustainability topics. A fall series of workshops and group workdays will be held every other Friday, 2-3 p.m. at the Garden Commons (Cultural Center).
