    As part of its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the University of Louisville recently introduced a new, free carpool-matching service, Cardinal Directions. The platform helps match riders going to the same destination and is available to UofL staff, faculty and students who want to find ways to reduce pollution and save money, time and hassle by cutting back on driving to campus.

    1.) New UofL Today email deadline coming

    Starting next Friday, Oct. 7, 2016, the UofL Today daily email will not be sent on Fridays. If you wish to promote a Friday event, please submit your announcement by noon on the preceding Wednesday and it will appear in the Thursday email. Submissions can still be made on Fridays to appear in Monday’s email. Aside from Friday announcements, the deadline for UofL Today will remain the same for the rest of the week (noon the day before). Click here to submit an announcement. Starting Oct. 7, UofL News digest will appear in faculty/staff inboxes every Friday.

    The HSC Office of Diversity & Inclusion is hosting a lunch and learn on the topic, “Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Children’s Health and Healthcare and Their Successful Elimination.” Speaker is Glenn Flores, MD, FAAP, distinguished chair of Health Policy Research at the Medica Research Institute, a research affiliate in the Department of Health Sciences Research at the May Clinic, and affiliate professor of Public Health in the Division of Health Policy and Management at the University of Minnesota.     University of Louisville employees can now access on-demand video programs from the 20-Minute Mentor Commons. This online resource is offered free of charge through the Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning. The courses cover a broad range of faculty development topics including classroom management, flipped courses, course design and more.

    7.) 10th Annual Anne Braden Memorial Lecture scheduled

    Angela Davis will deliver the lecture titled “Freedom Is a Constant Struggle.” For several decades, Angela Davis has been among the prominent scholar-activists fighting for racial, gender, and economic justice. At this event, people will be seated on a first-come, first-served basis.

    8.) ASNB Seminar Series features Wake Forest School of Medicine Professor

    Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology presents Barry Stein, PhD, professor and chair, Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy, Wake Forest School of Medicine. The title of his seminar is ” How the Brain Develops the Ability to Synthesize Information from Multiple Senses.”

    9.) Bioengineering Dept. Seminar Series continues Thursday

    September 29, noon to 1:30 p.m., The Vogt Building, Room 311

    Dr. Kevin Haworth, assistant professor of Internal Medicine and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Cincinnati, will speak on “The Case of the Missing Oxygen and Other Adventures in Ultrasound.” Acoustically active agents are being investigated for both diagnostic and therapeutic applications, and hold great promise as a non-invasive or minimally invasive therapeutic approach for a variety of diseases, including cardiovascular diseases and cancer. UofL Biomedical Ultrasonics and Cavitation Laboratory is investigating the ability to selectively sequester dissolved gases from fluids for the treatment of a variety of diseases using an acoustically active agent.

    October 8, 10 a.m. to noon, Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium; UofL rate: $12/scout; $3/adult

    Juniors will be able to explore and experience various sources of energy and how it is used. They board our virtual rocket ship to get a first-hand look at light pollution and constellations. Hands-on activities help them learn about solar power, wasteful/efficient packaging and other energizing information. Girls leave empowered with practical steps they can take toward energy conservation on their journey to earn the “It’s Your Planet, Love It!” awards.

    13.) Cosmic Explorer Workshop: ‘I Want to be an Astronaut’

    Let your child’s fascination with astronauts take flight in this workshop. Your 4-to-6-year-old will be engaged and amazed during the fun hands-on activities and demonstrations that illustrate the challenges of space travel. Our virtual space ship takes them on a tour of the universe and they get to taste Astronaut Ice Cream as they learn about the special food astronauts eat.

    UofL Caregiver Stress Study is looking for healthy European American, 40 years and older who have NOT provided care for an ill friend or family member in the last year to fill out a questionnaire and provide saliva samples for up to three different time points. Each visit takes approximately one hour. We are offering $20 compensation for each visit.

    Information Technology will release a new IT Service Catalog on October 3. This Catalog will allow IT customers to request a variety of services or direct questions to the HelpDesk.     Medicine Grand Rounds features Jesse Roman, MD, FACP, FACCP, professor of Medicine, Pharmacology and Toxicology, and chairman of the UofL Department of Medicine.
