    DID YOU KNOW?

     

    All 50 states are represented in enrollment for Fall 2014, but more out-of-state students—300—hail from Ohio than any other state, according to preliminary data from the Office of Institutional Research. Illinois comes in second place with 228 and Florida third with 203. The rest of the top 10: Tennessee (177), Georgia (147), California (141), North Carolina (114); Pennsylvania (110), Texas (103) and Virginia (99). The state with the least students? Wyoming (2).

    Thursday Flu Shot Schedule

    1.) Free flu shots for students, faculty, and staff today

    Sept. 25

    Students, faculty, and staff can get free flu shots through Campus Health Services ($5 for retirees) today.

    ·        HSC: 7:30-9:30 am HSC Fitness Center and 10:30 am-3:00 pm in the HCOC Conference Room

    ·        Belknap: 11:00 am -2:00 pm at the Student Activity Center outside of the bookstore and 4:30-7:00 pm at Bettie Johnson Hall

    6.) Medicine basic, bridge, collaborative grant programs

    The School of Medicine Research Committee administers the basic, bridge and collaborative matching Grant programs to provide financial support to School of Medicine faculty. These awards have been increased up to $25,000 for basic, $40,000 for bridge and $50,000 for collaborative with $25,000 in matched funds. The next cycle’s submission deadline is Oct. 1.

    Challenges and Progress for CO2 Conversion to Value Added Products, presented by Edward Rode, principle researcher, Det Norske Veritas Strategic Research & Innovation, Dublin, Ohio. This presentation will discuss some of the recent technical advances and promising technologies to convert CO2 to useful products reducing its concentration in earth’s atmosphere.     Kendra Grubb, MD, UofL assistant professor of surgery, department of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, presents Valvular Heart Disease-Focus on the Management of Aortic Stenosis. She will describe the risk, presentation, diagnosis, treatment option and emerging controversies in the treatment of aortic stenosis, apply current guidelines in the medical management of aortic stenosis, cite emerging data in support of specific medical recommendations and surgical procedures.

    The Department of Medicine presents the 2014 Theodore Segal Lecture featuring Steven E. Come, M.D., Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Director, Breast Medical Oncology Program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Come will present Breast Cancer: Where We Can Do Less, Where We Should Do More focusing on reviewing the current status of breast cancer screening and chemoprevention, and data identifying areas where less surgery and/or less chemotherapy are needed
