    DID YOU KNOW?

     

    Bicycle advocates and vendors will gather today in the Humanities Quad from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a World-Free Car Day celebration. Students and employees will receive the two-wheelers they ordered through Earn-A-Bike this fall, and riders who register their bikes with the Department of Public Safety at the event will receive free bike bells. The Health Promotion office will make smoothies using bicycle energy, the Sustainability Council will give away water bottles and the Conn Center for Renewable Energy will show off its velomobile, a single-passenger, bicycle-powered car.

    Monday Flu Shot Schedule

    1.) Free flu shots for students, faculty and staff start today!

    Students, faculty, and staff can get free flu shots through Campus Health Services ($5 for retirees) today.

    ·        HSC: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Kornhauser Auditorium (We can vaccinate at the top of the stairs for those with mobility challenges.)

    ·        Belknap: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Miller IT lower level

    2.) ‘Eda (Everyman)’ opens Wednesday

    Sept. 24-29 at Thrust Theatre, 2314 S. Floyd St. Performances are at 8 p.m., Sept. 24-26; 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., Sept. 28; and 8 p.m., Sept. 29. There is no performance Sept 27.

    Don’t forget to get your ticket to see our first play of the 2014-2015 Mainstage season. “Eda” written by Obotunde Ijimere, translated by Ulli Beier and directed by Nefertiti Burton is the Yoruba version of the medieval morality play “Everyman.” Tickets can be purchased at the Box Office M-F 10 to 4.

    4.) Movie and panel discussion of the documentary ‘Haze’

    Lynn Gordon (Gordie) Bailey Jr. was found dead at the Chi Psi Fraternity house after he and 26 other pledges were blindfolded and taken into a forest, where they were  “encouraged” to drink four handles of whiskey and six bottles of wine. The documentary “Haze” tells Gordie’s story within the greater context of alcohol abuse and hazing on campus in order to spark in-depth conversations about the role of alcohol and traditions to initiate members. The panel includes UofL’s own Ricky L. Jones.

    10.) UofL Community Music Program presents Suzuki Steps for babies and toddlers

    Begins Sept. 27, 10 to 11:00 a.m., Bardstown Road Center, 3415 Bardstown Rd. Also October 11, 18 and 25, Nov. 8 and 15, Dec 6 and 20.

    $15 per class

    This is a Suzuki Early Childhood Education class based on the “Mother Tongue Approach.” We believe: Every child can learn; ability develops early; environment nurtures growth; children learn from one another; success breeds success; parental involvement is critical; encouragement is essential. The first class is always free. Each additional class will be $15 per class Saturday 10:00 Classes-Sept 27, October 11,18,25 November 8, 15, Dec 6 and 20.

    Are you preparing materials to go on the market this spring? This workshop is designed to demystify the process, and to address the specific needs and questions of those from both the sciences and humanities who are embarking on this exciting experience. Overall, this workshop is a resource to help you identify and effectively present yourself as a candidate to the academic job of your future.     13.) PLAN workshop helps students read and respond to challenging texts in graduate school

    Sept. 23, noon to 1 p.m., Houchens Building, Room 105

    This workshop will focus on the distinctive demands of reading and responding to writing for graduate-level courses and research. We will cover concepts that can help you navigate your way through scholarly work, identify strategies for reading and responding to difficult scholarly texts, and understand professors’ expectations for how grad students are expected to use the scholarship.     14.) Type 2 diabetes mellitus study for children and adolescents 10 to 17 years

    The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit and the Wendy L. Novak Diabetes Care Center are conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the metabolism, as well as safety, of a medication in children and adolescents aged 10 to 17 years old who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. If the child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will attend threee clinic visits; receive the study medication and study-related care at no cost. Compensation available for time/travel.

    15.) Autism study for children 4 to less than 8 years old

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate how a medication treats abnormal EEG’s without seizures, as well as behavioral and neurological symptoms, in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). If a child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will receive the study medication or placebo and study-related care at no cost. Parents will be offered compensation for time/travel.

    16.) Research study for nausea and vomiting after a scheduled surgery, birth through 17 years

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and dose response of a drug given orally prior to a scheduled surgery that is used to prevent post-operative nausea and vomiting.  Children from birth to 17 years of age may be eligible for participation.  Subjects may be compensated for time/travel.

    17.) Pain study, infants and toddlers less than 2 years

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate acetaminophen given into a vein to treat moderate to severe pain in infants and children less than 2 years of age following surgery or an injury. Subjects may be compensated for time/travel.

    18.) Pediatric pain study, 7 through 16 years

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety, pharmacokinetics and efficacy of an investigational drug used to treat moderate to severe prolonged or persistent pain.  Children 7 to less than 17 years of age who require continuous analgesia for moderate to severe pain for an extended period of time may be eligible for participation.  Patients will be reimbursed for reasonable travel costs associated with their participation in the study.
