    The first State of the University address was given in 2004 as a single event designed to bring the campus together in marking the beginning of the Fall semester. The State of the University is now a series of events that take place in the days before and after President James Ramsey’s address, which is scheduled for today at 2:30 p.m. in the School of Music’s Comstock Hall.     1.) Flu shot week begins Sept. 22

    Students, faculty and staff can get free flu shots through Campus Health Services ($5 for retirees). Shot clinics start Sept. 22 on Belknap and Health Sciences Center campuses. A full schedule and consent form can be found here. Download, print and complete the consent form for fastest service. You must show your UofL ID to get the free shot.

    2.) Applications being taken for 2015 Provost’s Staff Leadership Academy

    Human Resources is taking applications for the 2015 Provost’s Staff Leadership Academy. The leadership academy is intended to help UofL staff understand and develop leadership qualities which they can apply in current and future positions at the university. Participants will learn about leadership and explore their strengths and opportunities in managing ideas and people. Learn more about application here.

    3.) Sweet celebration to mark nation’s founding

    Students hungry for American history can get free cupcakes and free pocket-sized copies of the U.S. Constitution Sept. 17 courtesy of the McConnell Center. The center celebrates the 1787 signing of the famed document every year on Constitution Day.

    4.) Save the Date: Motivation and learning expert Barron to visit UofL

    Oct. 10; open presentation 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library; lunch workshop 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Delphi Center, Ekstrom Library (registration required for lunch workshop)

    Kenn Barron from the Motivation Research Institute at James Madison University will offer a one-hour open presentation for the UofL community about his research and applications to teaching and learning. No registration is required. Barron will also lead lunch workshop for faculty in which he will share a single, unifying motivation formula for understanding the key sources of student motivation.

    5.) Spoken word performance on South Africa 20 Years after Apartheid

    Sept. 18, 4 p.m., Thrust Theatre

    Free and open to the public

    Celebrate International Day of Peace with a spoken word performance by South African cultural activist Diana Ferrus. A panel discussion with Diana, UofL’s Tyler Fleming, UK’s Steve Davis and African history student Amina Ahmed immediately follows the performance. A book signing with Diana and reception will close out the evening. Sponsored by Peace, Justice and Conflict Transformation, Anne Braden Institute, History, Pan African Studies, English, Women’s and Gender Studies and Social Change.

    6.) Free retirement planning workshops scheduled for Belknap, HSC

    7.) Recent A&S Alumni Network Networking Night to be held at SRC

    9.) New Office of Industry Engagement Service Account established

    The UofL Office of Industry Engagement (OIE) has established a new e-mail service account engage@louisville.edu for submission of proposals, contractual documents, requests and inquiries related to non-clinical, industry-sponsored projects (including those supported with government flow through via for-profit entities). Named as Industry Engagement, Service Account in the Outlook Address Book, the OIE Service Account replaces the Industry Contracts Service Account for non-clinical purposes.

    11.) UofL Free Store open Thursdays

    Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Unitas Tower basement

    Free

    UofL’s Free Store is open with expanded hours on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Unitas Tower basement (enter from driveway off Cardinal Boulevard). At the Free Store, any student or employee can donate or shop for free clothing, shoes, electronics, appliances, household supplies, books, school and art supplies, non-perishable food, etc. The Free Store keeps useful items out of the landfill while helping those in need. It’s a volunteer-powered initiative of UofL’s Sustainability Council and the RSO GRASS.

With: Zunar, Malaysian political cartoonist; Joel Pett, Pulitzer-prize-winning editorial cartoonist for the Lexington Herald-Leader; Jason Abbott, director of the Center for Asian Democracy.     Cathy Price and Lloyd Asher from UofL’s Department of Environmental Health and Safety will present the university’s mandatory Lab Safety Training program for researchers, faculty and students who work with chemicals in their labs. The presentation meets the UofL Safety Certification requirement for new lab employees and those needing re-certification every three years.

    The Department of Neurology welcomes Dr. Eric T. Wong from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Wong’s presentation “Dexamethasone exerts profound interference on Novo TTF-100A & Chemotherapy efficacy for recurrent Glioblastoma” will provide an understanding of the mechanism of action of alternating electric field therapy.
