    DID YOU KNOW?

     

    During World War II, UofL was one of 131 colleges and universities to serve as a Navy V-12 Officer Training Program site. Between 1943 and 1946, approximately 900 men enrolled in the program, which later became a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Unit (NROTC).

    1.) Free Theatre Arts Repertory Company performance Monday

    Come and see the Theatre Arts Repertory Company perform before they begin touring JCPS Schools for the 2014-2015 year. “Ms. Peabody’s Apples,” adapted by Assistant Professor Erin Leigh Crites and Company (from the book “Mr. Peabody’s Apples” by Madonna) takes place in Happville, USA, where rumors are flying like feathers on the breeze. Journey with us and learn about the power of words and how we must choose them carefully to avoid causing harm to others.

    2.) Free DPS cookout is Monday

    Sept. 15, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

    The Department of Public Safety will hold its annual student cookout Monday in the DPS plaza on Floyd Street between the Parking Office and the UofL Police Department. Students, faculty and staff are invited to enjoy free hamburgers, bratwurst, hot dogs and other treats while meeting DPS officials. Don’t forget to sign up for door prizes!

    3.) Volunteers needed for Healthy Hoops Kentucky

    Sept. 20, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Moore Traditional High School

    Healthy Hoops Kentucky is a day dedicated to helping kids with asthma stay active. It starts with health screenings and includes a parent education session and the highlight: A basketball camp with former UofL basketball standout Darrell Griffith and friends. Volunteers are needed. We would also ask that you spread the word and help us reach the participants that would benefit most from the event.

    6.) University financials offline for extended PM in October

    The university’s financial system will go offline for a few days in October while IT completes an upgrade. Exact timing of the offline period will appear in UofL Today as the October implementation approaches. Functionality will remain at the same level in most areas. Users will be contacted concerning any changes that affect their access. Please look for future news about exact dates and impact to University Reports.

    8.) Last day to nominate students for Mortar Board Honorary

    Nominations due 4 p.m. Sept. 12

    Life membership $110

    Faculty and staff are invited to nominate undergraduate students to apply for Mortar Board National Senior Honorary. Requirements are excellence in scholarship, leadership and service. The chapter is active in service to campus and the community with book drives, soup kitchen help and public lectures. Requirements include a GPA of 3.15 and 60 current credit hours.

    9.) Calling all research tools

    Has your lab produced unique purified proteins, modified cell lines, monoclonal antibody stocks, mouse models, or unique plasmids? The Office of Technology Transfer is interested in speaking with faculty regarding commercialization potential of faculty research tools.

    10.) Last chance: Register to learn how to collect meaningful data to inform how you teach

    Sept. 18, Noon to 2 p.m., Delphi Center, Ekstrom Library

    This two-part Dine and Discover session is designed to help you gather and analyze student learning data to directly inform teaching choices during the course of this semester. Join Patty Payette and Marie Kendall Brown as they teach the fundamentals of the research-based practice called “Mid-semester Feedback” (MSF). MSFs are short feedback sessions you conduct with your students to gather feedback about learning, attitudes, and experiences to inform mid-stream course adjustments.

    11.) Special admission tonight to Skies Over Louisville

    $5 (usually $6 for UofL affiliates/$8 adults)

    The StarGeezer (aka Mark Steven Williams) is the guest host for Friday evening’s Skies Over Louisville. September’s cool, clear evenings are ideal for star gazing, so be sure to come by to get a star map and learn what you can see in the current night sky. Louisville Astronomical Society members will be on hand with telescopes in the courtyard following the show so you can practice what you’ve learned. And, everyone gets a special admission rate on all shows Friday evening of just $5/person!

    12.) Chemical Engineering seminar

    Joel R. Fried, PhD, recently appointed professor and department chair of the chemical engineering department, will present a seminar titled Ion Transport through Biomimetic Channels.

    13.) Mathematics colloquium

    Sept. 12, 3 p.m., Natural Sciences, 333

    The speaker will be Harry Miller of International University of Sarajevo. He will speak about “Divergent Series—the work of the devil ?” The book Divergent Series by G.H.  Hardy is a classic. In his introduction, Hardy states that some mathematicians in the early 19th century thought that any argument based on non-convergence should be considered the work of the devil. Hardy states several examples of highly non-rigorous arguments that led people (for example Euler) to correct conclusions.

    14.) Biology fall seminar series

    Sarah Andrews, PhD will present, The hope and challenge of making a universal influenza vaccine. She has a background in immunology and is currently a research professional in the rheumatology department at the University of Chicago Medical School. Her research focuses on the adaptability of the human immune system to evolving pathogens, such as influenza, by studying the B cell response to influenza vaccination.
