    1.) Verify Social Security numbers

    The university must request dependent Social Security numbers to meet new IRS reporting requirements. Please take a moment to update or add the Social Security numbers for each of your dependents. To verify, visit Ulink, go to the Faculty/Staff tab, Employee Benefits, Dependent Update.

    Grawemeyer Awards 30th Anniversary

    2.) Symposium: Innovative Approaches to Education

    Oct. 15, 5 p.m., Comstock Hall, School of Music

    Innovative approaches to education will be explored as former Grawemeyer Award in Education winners Carol Gilligan, Pasi Sahlberg and Vanessa Siddle Walker—all internationally renowned experts—come together to share their thoughts, ideas and research. UofL alumnus and journalist Bob Edwards will moderate.

    3.) Diane Ravitch to hold discussion

    Oct. 20, 5 p.m., Ekstrom Library, Room W104

    “The Death and Life of the American School System,” takes a look at how testing and choice are undermining education. Based on Diane Ravitch’s 2010 book of the same name that earned her the 2014 Grawemeyer Award in Education, she will join the talk via Skype.

    4.) Student Recreation Center Faculty/Staff Open House

    Oct. 7, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., Student Recreation Center

    Free

    Faculty and staff who are not current members of the Student Recreation Center are invited to use the facility at no cost on Wednesday, Oct. 7. Get in a workout, play some golf on the indoor simulator, step into a group fitness class, slam a racquetball or shoot some hoops, it’s all there for you from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Just bring a valid UofL ID with you. Locks and towels are available at no cost as well. Guided tours of the facility will be available between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

    5.) Thursday: Title IX Mandatory Reporter training to be held

    Are you aware that as a UofL employee, you are likely a mandatory Title IX reporter? Do you understand the responsibilities & requirements included in this role? There are two federal laws, Title IX & the Clery Act, that establish responsibilities for employees of universities to report certain types of crimes and incidents, especially sexual misconduct. To learn more about these laws, including the reporting requirements of “responsible employees,” and how to report, please register.

    6.) Department of Medicine issues new NIH spreadsheets with new GRA fringe rate

    The Dept. of Medicine has revised its NIH R01 and R03/R21 budget spreadsheets to include the new GRA insurance rate and has posted them here.

    7.) Why Black Lives Matter: Focus on Louisville

    11.) Green Tip: Campus tree-huggers wanted!

    Every year since 2010, the Arbor Day Foundation has recognized UofL as a Tree Campus USA. With over 2,500 trees representing dozens of species, UofL has developed a Belknap Tree Tour and Tree Inventory to help you use our campus as an educational tool and a Campus Tree Care Plan to ensure responsible management. All of this was developed by the Sustainability Council’s Campus Tree Advisory Committee which welcomes you to participate in our fall meeting on Wednesday 10/7 at 2 p.m. in Ekstrom W210.

    12.) McConnell Center examines America at the end of the Civil War

    Oct. 8, 7 p.m., Chao Auditorium

    Free, open to the public

    Texas A&M history professor Lorien Foote, PhD, will discuss the long road to recovery for Civil War prisoners. For both Yankees and Rebels, recovering prisoners of war was an extended and uneven process. Foote is the author of The Gentlemen and the Roughs: Manhood, Honor, and Violence in the Union Army (2010), which was a finalist and honorable mention for the 2011 Lincoln Prize. This event is part of the McConnell Center’s three-part lecture series on America at the End of War.

    13.) Educator:  Dr. Rowan Chlebowski presents ‘Lifestyle and Breast Cancer: Incidence and Outcome’

    Dr. Rowan Chlebowski, MD, PhD, is chief of the Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and investigator, Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute. Dr. Chlebowski will share updated results from the Women’s Intervention Nutrition Study, and the Women’s Health Initiative.

    This week’s Neuroscience Grand Rounds will be presented by Dr. David Magnuson, professor and Friends for Michael Endowed Chair, departments of neurological surgery, anatomical sciences & neurobiology, and biomedical engineering, KSCIRC, UofL. Dr. Magnuson’s presentation is titled What is ‘Clinically Relevant’ in Spinal Cord Injury Research Using Animal Models. 1 CME and 1.2 CEU credit will be given to MDs, DOs and RNs who attend.
