    UofL was one of three universities this weekend to win an urban initiatives innovation award from the Association of Public and Land-Grant Institutions. Neville Pinto, dean of the J.B. Speed School of Engineering, presented UofL’s pitch, titled “Institute for Product Realization—Connecting Education, Research and Job Creation.” The winning schools each received $10,000 to support their initiatives.     National Healthy Eating Day is Thursday

    Celebrate National Healthy Eating Day by picking up healthy recipes throughout the week at the Get Healthy Now Wellness Center. Don’t let all the hard work you put in go to (your) “waist:” Stay ahead of the curve and keep the holiday weight down by visiting the GHN Wellness Center at Humana Gym to keep your fitness plan going strong.

    2.) 9th Annual HSC Patricia Allen Cultural Competency Workshop is Tuesday

    Nov. 4, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., HSC Kornhauser Auditorium

    Students, faculty and staff are invited to a workshop focused on cultural competency learning.  There will be seven concurrent breakout sessions, a poverty simulation and a keynote presentation featuring Marc A. Nivet, chief diversity officer for the Association of American Medical Colleges. Nivet provides strategic vision and programmatic leadership on issues surrounding community engagement, diversity and health equity at universities, medical schools and teaching hospitals across the United States and Canada. Breakfast and lunch provided.

    3.) SOFO Day of the Dead celebration will be Friday

    Nov. 7, 5:30 to 10 p.m., S. Fourth Street between the Seelbach and Brown Hotels

    Free admission; food and drink for purchase

    The event will feature plenty of hands-on workshops, including face painting, sugar skull decorating, paper flower making and much more compliments of the LALS Club. Party goers are encouraged to dress in costumes, especially as Frida Kahlo or their favorite “calavera” (skeleton). La Cocina de Mama and Meta will have Mexican food, beer, wine and margarita offerings for sale for festival attendees. The event is free, open to the public and family-friendly.

    4.) Register today for the UofL Women’s Center Empowerment Luncheon

    Nov. 13, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., University Club

    $50 per person ($400 for table of eight)

    Registrations are being accepted through Nov. 7 for the Women’s Center annual Empowerment Luncheon. Guest speaker will be Alice K. Houston, president and CEO of Houston-Johnson, Inc. The winners of the 2014 Tachau Gender Equity Award, Nichols Professional Development Award and the Women’s Center Empowerment Award will be recognized.

    5.) Help harvest sweet potatoes at the Garden Commons workday

    Nov. 4, 5 p.m., Garden Commons (next to the Cultural Center)

    Interested in health, sustainability, good food and growing things? We need your help to make our garden grow! Please join us as we weed, water and harvest sweet potatoes from UofL’s organic Garden Commons! No prior experience necessary. Tools and gloves provided. Dress to get dirty. The Garden Commons is open to participation throughout the year from students, staff, faculty and community members.

    Please join the Delphi Center and Glen Garrett from iClicker for lunch and a session about iClicker/iClickerGo. iClicker is a tool that allows students to submit answers for in-class polling, and iClickerGo adds the convenience of using a smart phone or laptop as a substitute clicker. Lunch will be provided for this session. Registration is required.

    7.) New date set for student motivation presentation

    Nov. 21, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Chao Auditorium

    Kenn Barron will offer a one-hour presentation to the UofL community on his work in motivation theory, “Motivation Demystified: Steps We All Can Take to Improve Student Motivation.” He will address the major sources of student motivation and offer steps to promote these sources in course design. Barron is co-director of the Motivation Research Institute at James Madison University.

    8.) Talk scheduled on Hessian prisoners of war during American Revolution

    Nov. 5, 1 p.m., Historic Locust Grove, 561 Blankenbaker Lane

    UofL Associate Professor Daniel Krebs will speak on life in captivity for German (Hessian) prisoners of war during the American Revolution. Thousands of the 37,000 German contract soldiers to the British army were imprisoned by the American revolutionaries. Krebs will explain the motivations of the German states that provided these contract soldiers. Krebs talk will be based on his recent book, “A Generous and Merciful Enemy: Life for German Prisoners of War During the American Revolution.”

    The Department of Neurosurgery will host this week’s neuroscience grand rounds featuring Dr. Mario Arturo Alonso Vanegas. Dr. Alonso Vanegas is a professor of functional neurosurgery at the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery in Mexico City, Mexico. His lecture is titled The Surgical Treatment of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. Our Experience and Contribution in Mexico. This event awards 1 CME credit to MDs and DOs and 1.2 CE Nursing credits.
