George Howe, who in his 45-year (yes, 45) career at UofL has helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for student scholarships through his namesake, the George Howe Red Barn, talks about it here.

    1.) New Music Festival Kicks off Tuesday

    Nov. 10-15, Unless otherwise noted, concerts start at 8 p.m. and are in Comstock Concert Hall at the School of Music

    All concerts are free and open to the public

    The School of Music presents the 2015 New Music Festival celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Grawemeyer Award in Music Composition this week. Kaija Saariaho, a 2003 winner of the award, is the star guest composer.

    2.) Get an active start to your day with GHN Total Body Fitness

    Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30 to 7:00 a.m., Get Healthy Now Wellness Center at Humana Gym

    Free for GHN Wellness Center members

    Energize your mornings, fire up your metabolism, and burn calories with a total body workout. This class will motivate you to maintain your fitness goals during the holiday season and is designed to improve cardio, flexibility, and speed while strengthening and toning muscles. 30 minutes, suitable for all fitness levels.

    3.) Earn the rewards of good health in 2016

    Enroll today to participate in Get Healthy Now and earn the rewards of good health in 2016! All employees, retirees, and their spouse/QA can participate. The $40 monthly premium incentive (up to $480/year) is awarded to all participating employees and retirees covered on UofL’s health plan. Annual completion of a new Health Assessment is mandatory for 2016 participation in Get Healthy Now (between Oct 19 – Nov 19, 2015).     This week’s food truck schedule for Belknap Campus:

    Tuesday, Nov. 10: Boss Hog BBQ, Shumaker/Humanities, 10:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

    Wednesday, Nov. 11: Mark’s Feed Store, College of Business, 10:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

    Thursday, Nov. 12: Pollo, Speed/Duthie, 10:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.; Traveling Kitchen, Ville Grill, 4 to 7 p.m.

     

    5.) Old Louisville residents should move your cars before city street sweeping Nov. 25

    Louisville Metro Government is asking UofL students, faculty and staff to move their cars off Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth streets Wednesday, Nov. 25 for street cleaning. Cars should be off those streets from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cars parked on those streets during street sweeping may be towed. Last year, more than 300 cars – many belonging to UofL employees or students — were towed in Old Louisville.

    7.) Lab Safety and Hazardous Waste training

    Nov. 12, 9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., Room 2034, KWing

    Free

    Recently hired lab employees who work with chemicals should attend this training. Recurrent training for lab employees is required every three years and may be completed in Bioraft (online refresher training). Bring employee/student ID number to sign in. Attendees can pre-register at www.louisville.edu/dehs, however advanced registration is not required.

    The Seminars in Neuroscience Lecture Series is pleased to host Michael Iadarola, PhD, senior research scientist, anesthesia section, Department of Perioperative Medicine, Clinical Center, National Institutes of Health. The title of his lecture is “Translational Transcriptomics of Nociceptive Circuits.” There will be a graduate student appreciation week reception immediately following the lecture outside the auditorium.
