    DID YOU KNOW?

     

    UofL’s student athletes continue to garner academic honors. Junior Kelsi Worrell was named the 2015 ACC Women’s Swimming & Diving Scholar Athlete of the Year, while three women’s basketball players – senior Sara Hammond and sophomores Myisha Hines-Allen and Mariya Moore – were each named to the 2015 All-ACC Academic Women’s Basketball team. On the men’s basketball side, seven were named to the 2015 All-ACC Academic Men’s Basketball team – senior Wayne Blackshear; junior Montrezl Harrell; sophomores Anton Gill, Mangok Mathiang and Terry Rozier; and freshmen Chinanu Onuaku and Quentin Snider. Hammond and Blackshear will receive their diplomas Sunday.

    2.) Time to submit Welcome Week 2015 Event Guide announcements

    If you have an event taking place from August 19 – September 7, and would like to submit it for possible inclusion in the 2015 Welcome Week Event Guide, submit it here  by June 12. The Event Guide is distributed to all first-years and many upperclass students, so this is a great way to promote your programs and events!

    3.) UofL Suzuki Summer String Institute  offering baby/toddler class

    $100 for UofL employees, family and friends

    The University of Louisville Suzuki Summer String Institute is proud to be offering a Suzuki Steps Baby/Toddler Music Class during its institute this year. For UofL employees, family and friends, you can attend a baby music class daily for one week, six classes meeting 1:30 p.m. June 14 and 9:30 a.m. June 15-19. This is for parent(s) and child for only $100. Also offering new beginning classes on violin, viola, cello and guitar, ages 3+ for five days for the low cost of $200.

    4.) The Secret History of Rock n’ Roll

    May 19, noon to 1p.m., Carnegie Center for Art and History, 201 E. Spring St., New Albany, Indiana

    Free for UofL faculty, staff and students

    Author Michael L. Jones will examine the development of American popular music through the prism of jug band music, the subject of his recent book, “Louisville Jug Band Music: From Earl McDonald to the National Jubilee.” His talk will touch on the origins of bluegrass string bands, the development of the minstrel show, and the early days of the American music industry. The Carnegie is a member of A&S’s Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships.

    5.) Reminder: Peri-operative Critical Events

    May 16, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. School of Medicine Paris Simulation Center

    Join us as Drs. Latif, Lenhardt and Wadhwa along with the Department of Anesthesiology and Peri-operative Medicine present Peri-operative Critical Events. This one day CME course will offer lectures in the morning and hands on practice with simulation based learning in the afternoon.

    6.) Enhancing Clinical Skills with Ethnically and Racially Diverse Clients

    Given the increasing diversity of clients seeking mental health care, there is an urgent need to enhance the cultural sensitivity of therapeutic interventions with ethnic and racial minority populations. These two workshops will provide you with the tools needed to successfully incorporate cultural factors into therapy. Part 1 provides essential information about the ethnic minority experience and the mental health risks they face. Part 2 focuses on proficient application of therapeutic strategies.
