1.) University-wide undergraduate research and creative activity to be displayed

The Office of the Executive Vice President for Research and Innovation is sponsoring the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium. Students, faculty and the community can discuss cutting-edge research topics, examine the connection between research and education and explore the broad range of research at UofL. Deadline for electronic abstract submission is April 10.

2.) School of Medicine Basic, Bridge and Collaborative Grant programs
The School of Medicine Research Committee administers theBasic, Bridge and Collaborative Matching Grant programs to provide financial support to School of Medicine faculty. These awards have been increased up to $25,000 for Basic, $40,000 for Bridge and $50,000 for Collaborative with $25,000 in matched funds. The next cycle’s submission deadline is April 1, 2014.

3.) Green Tip: Spring cleaning reuse and recycling
Need to rid of spring cleaning junk? Don’t trash it. Use UofL’s recycling and reuse options. Departmental furniture, equipment and electronics should go to UofL Surplus. Personal clothing, office and household supplies, media, electronics, etc. can be donated to the UofL Free Store in Unitas on Fridays 1 to 3 p.m. We recycle all kinds of plastic, paper, cardboard, metal and glass in our single-stream bins, and have collections for recycling batteries, e-waste, lighting, printer cartridges and chemicals.
4.) Green Tip: Gear up for better bicycling weather
Free bike tuneups: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, March 17 and 18, Students Activities Center ramp
Get fit. Save money. Reduce stress. Cut your carbon footprint. Have fun. Spring is almost here and it’s time to get ready to get around by bike. Get Healthy Now is organizing monthly group bike rides to campus from various neighborhoods. All experience levels welcome, and all will receive orientation and a bike map. First ride is 7:30 a.m. Thursday, March 20, near the zoo Distance to Belknap is 4 miles, and takes approximately 20 minutes.

If you drive more than 15 miles to campus each day and you’d like to save money, time and pollution, consider the advantages of getting in on one of the newly forming UofL vanpools. 8.) Reminder: US Sen. Kelly Ayotte to speak as McConnell Center guest

US Sen. Kelly Ayotte, a leading voice in the Republican Party on national security, foreign affairs and fiscal responsibility in government, will give a public talk as a guest of the university’s McConnell Center. Ayotte is the only Republican in New Hampshire’s four-member congressional delegation and was mentioned as a possible running mate for GOP nominee Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election. Tickets to the talk are free, but must be requested online.

9.) Phi Beta Kappa Lecture presents Kwame Anthony Appiah

Named one of Foreign Policy’s Top 100 public intellectuals, Kwame Anthony Appiah teaches at New York University. He has previously taught at Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Duke and the University of Ghana. He is also president of the PEN American Center, the world’s oldest human rights organization. In 2012, he was awarded the National Humanities Medal by the White House. He will present the talk “Cosmopolitanism: Ethics in a World of Strangers.” A reception will follow.

10.) Winner of UofL’s first renewable energy prize to speak

Swiss chemist Michael Graetzel, the winner of the University of Louisville’s first $50,000 Leigh Ann Conn Prize for Renewable Energy, will give a free public lecture.
Graetzel, professor and director of the Laboratory of Photonics and Interfaces at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Switzerland, is being recognized for merging nanoscience and photoconversion in his discovery of a new solar cell that is easier and less costly to produce than silicon-based cells.

Faculty from the English, History and Pan-African Studies departments will discuss this year’s Academy Award winner for best picture, “12 Years a Slave.” Shirletta Kinchen, Pan-African Studies, will moderate the discussion. The panel includes Dan Vivian and A. Glenn Crothers, History, and Karen Chandler, English.
