    DID YOU KNOW?

     

    UofL is training hundreds of high school educators as College Board AP teachers. The week of June 15, more than 125 high school teachers from across the state and country will be on the UofL and duPont Manual campuses earning their certification. Another session will be held July 20 to 24 with 100 to 200 teachers. This is the fifth year for the AP Summer Institute, which the Office of Admissions and College of Education and Human Development started as a way to expose teachers to recent developments on campus. Several academic departments and the Ideas to Action initiative provide presentations. Want to know more? Contact Jeanne Guerrero.

    1.) We put the “fun” in Functional Fitness

    Saturdays, 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., Get Healthy Now Wellness Center, Humana Gym

    Free for UofL employees, retirees and their spouses/QAs

    Focus on core fitness that will translate to improved function while performing daily activities. Functional Fitness will target all of the major muscle groups while hitting the smaller muscles at the same time. Have fun performing functional movements that will nourish your spine, revitalize your postural muscles, strengthen your core and enhance your “trouble areas.” Suitable for all fitness levels.

    2.) Bob Cochran retirement Open House

    June 17, 3 to 5 p.m., Red Barn

    Please join us for an open house Wednesday at the Red Barn for Bob Cochran, director of payroll. Bob is retiring June 30 after 42 years of service to the university. Please stop by to thank Bob for all that he has done and to wish him well with this new chapter of his life.

    .) School of Medicine Basic, Bridge and Collaborative grant programs

    The School of Medicine Research Committee administers the Basic, Bridge, and Collaborative Matching Grant programs to provide financial support to School of Medicine faculty. These awards have been increased up to $25K for Basic, $40K for Bridge, and $50K for Collaborative with $25K in matched funds. The next cycle’s submission deadline is July 1.

    3.) 2015 KC Huang Memorial Seminar

    The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology presents the 2015 KC Huang Memorial Seminar by Professors Jean-Marie Dupret and Fernando Rodrigues-Lima of University of Paris Diderot-Paris 7. Aromatic amine chemicals and Arylamine N-acetyltransferases; bioremediation of soils contaminated with aromatic amines; understanding Arylamine N-acetyltransferase properties through structural analysis of bacterial isoforms.

    4.) Research participants needed

    Have you experienced financial hardship as a result of having cancer? Researchers at UofL’s Kent School of Social Work and School of Medicine are conducting a study about the impact of cancer treatment on the financial well-being and quality of life of cancer survivors. Participation involves completion of a brief questionnaire and an interview. To be eligible, you must be 18 years or older and have been diagnosed with cancer within the past three years.     5.) ‘Death before Dishonor: Famous Kentucky Duels’

    June 19, noon, The Library at Oxmoor Farm, 720 Oxmoor Ave.

    Free for UofL faculty, staff and students

    James Pritchard of the Filson Historical Society staff will discuss an era of Kentucky history in which personal disputes were settled at gunpoint. More than 40 notable duels were fought in the Commonwealth between 1790 and 1840. The Filson is a member of A&S’s Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships.
