    DID YOU KNOW?

     

    Deborah Skaggs Speth, archivist for the U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell and Elaine L. Chao Archives, has been appointed to the Advisory Committee on the Records of Congress. The committee advises Congress and the Archivist of the United States on the management and preservation of congressional records. Skaggs Speth has worked at UofL for 17 years and is celebrating her 40th year as an archivist.

    Belknap Construction

    1.) Floyd, Warnock construction to continue this week

    One-way traffic west-bound only will continue on Warnock Avenue from Arthur Street to Floyd Street the week of July 6-10. Crews continue to work in the roadway on Floyd, so one-lane traffic each way will continue throughout the week. Work also will continue on Warnock between Floyd and Brook streets.     2.) Cards Under the Stars: Big Hero 6

    July 10, 6:30 p.m., on the lawn between the Natural Sciences Building and Grawemeyer Hall, movie begins at dusk

    Free admission

    Grab a blanket, lawn chairs and a cooler and bring the family for a screening of the film “Big Hero 6.” Let the kids enjoy our inflatable park, play games, “Big Hero 6” photo area and other activities. Bring a picnic or purchase concessions from Mangia and POLLO food trucks.  And don’t forget, Cards Under the Stars returns July 24 with the 2015 live-action film “Cinderella.”

    3.) Healthy Eating Around the Globe Cooking – Cooking Demo & Tasting

    July 16, HSC Farmers Market (Rain location, SPHIS Rm. 103), 11-11:20 a.m.; Belknap Farmers Market) 4:40 to 5:00 p.m.

    Free for UofL employees, retirees and their spouses/QAs

    Hop aboard for a trip around the world while learning how to prepare simple and healthy international meals. Are you ready to be inspired to try new recipes, new flavors and ingredients? If so, join us for this Take 20 and walk away from this session being able to mix-and-match elements from different diets to create your own personalized version of healthy eating.

    4.) Free information security training session

    July 8, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Ekstrom Library Chao Auditorium

    This session is presented by the university’s Info Security Office and is free and open to all faculty and staff. Topics include: identifying and protecting “sensitive data” and KY’s new privacy law (HB5) and how it impacts you. We will also cover tips to help you protect your work and personal data.     5.) Save the date for PLAN’s career colloquium

    July 31, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Houchens Building, Room 105

    In this intensive, half-day workshop, we will cover career basics, including job materials (resumes, CVs, and cover letters), job interviewing, transferable skills, and making a PLAN for your next steps. Whether you’re job searching this coming year or preparing for your future, NOW is the time to PLAN. Register by July 24th, as at least 10 people are needed for the program and lunch will be provided. Grad students interested in attending can find more info and register on the PLAN website.

    6.) PLAN offers workshop for graduate students on creating an online portfolio for job search

    July 8, 2 to 4 p.m., Ekstrom Library, Room W102

    What is your web presence like? Do you have a professional online presence? If you are going on the job market, the answer to these questions could set you apart from other applicants. This workshop will discuss why you should develop an online portfolio, what information should be included, and how even the busy or technologically-challenged can build an online presence starting today.     7.) Lab Safety and Hazardous Waste training

    July 9, 9 to 11:45 a.m., July 9 Donald Baxter I Auditorium

    Recently hired lab employees who work with chemicals should attend this training. Recurrent training for lab employees is required every three years. Bring employee/student ID number to sign in. Attendees can pre-register at www.louisville.edu/dehs, however advanced registration is not required.

    9.) Management of chronic disease in persons with dementia

    As our population ages, the incidence of chronic diseases increases, as does the incidence of dementia. Dr. Rangaraj Gopalraj and Sharon Mattingly, UofL Geriatrics, and Betty Shiels, Kent School, will explore these issues, providing insights for care planning, decision-making, and the involvement of the person and caregiver in this process.
