    9.) Promoting mental health in nursing homes: Research stories

    Meet Professor Suzanne Meeks, Chair of the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences. She has devoted her research to late-life mental health, especially depression and other disorders, in long-term care settings. Her studies have been funded by the National Institute of Mental Health. In her presentation, Dr. Meeks will talk about a 15-year program of research that focused on understanding and treating mental health problems, and promoting well-being, of nursing home patients.

Please note that inclusion in the official event schedule is at FYI’s discretion. No events will be promoted if they occur at the same time as any signature/key events which are a priority for first-year student attendance. We will do our best to accommodate as many requests as possible, as we build an overall event flow which is intentional and strategic.

    12.) Workshop planned on reducing experiences of violence on campus

    As members of the campus community, we are regularly encouraged to say something if we see something concerning. Yet most of us know this is easier said than done. The UofL PEACC (Prevention Education Advocacy on Campus and in the Community) Center offers some practical tools to prevent and respond to these situations. Join us as we discuss warning signs of sexual violence, resources and policies, and a prevention model that includes skill-building opportunities.

    13.) Gray Street Farmers Market opening date has been set

    The Gray Street Farmers Market will reopen on May 19 for its 8th season. Favorite vendors will return, including Flour Power, Full Heart Farm, Granny’s Delights, Green Farm, Gypsy Ridge, Lowe Creek, Jackson’s Produce, Mr. G’s, and Summer Shade Soap Company. Also, new vendors are being sought, especially those who sell meat, eggs and cheese.

    14.) Joan Riehm Award nominations open

    The Partnership for a Green City is accepting nominations for the 2016 Joan Riehm Memorial Environmental Leadership Award through March 31. This award recognizes Sustainability Leadership in Public Service among the partner organizations – UofL, JCPS, JCTC and Louisville Metro government along with the MSD, Louisville Water Company, TARC and the Regional Airport Authority. Award comes with $500 honorarium and a public announcement.

    16.) Symposium on ‘Art as Social Action: Louisville Implications’

    The Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships presents symposium where local and regional leaders share their experiences in how arts activities, art making, and artist housing can impact the city. The keynote speaker is Mary Jane Jacob, author, curator and professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Jacob has organized community-based programs in Chicago, Atlanta and Charleston. Jacob will discuss the use of art as a social force and in sustained engagement with locations.

    19.) Study on childhood obesity in children 10 to less than 14 year olds

    IRB #13.0334. The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a research study to evaluate the effect of an investigational product on childhood obesity. White and African American male and female subjects 10 to less than 14 years old who are overweight, obese or normal weight may be eligible. If a child qualifies to participate, he or she will receive the product or placebo and study related care at no cost. Compensation will be provided for time/travel.
