    Sustainability

Green Tip: Environmental impact of e-mailing large files

We assume that e-communications are eco-friendly – no paper, no ink, no shipping supplies, no gas for transportation, etc. But it takes energy to move digital data, too. It’s estimated that emailing a 1.2-megabyte attachment such as a large photo can use enough energy to boil 4 kettles of water. The information industry’s global carbon footprint now matches the airline industry’s. Rather than e-mailing large attachments, use file-sharing sites such as Blackboard, Flickr, DropBox, or SharePoint.
