    1.) 850 to participate in winter commencement

    Dec. 18, 7 p.m., KFC Yum! Center;  3 p.m. doctoral hooding ceremony

    UofL President James Ramsey will preside at the 7 p.m. event and College of Arts and Sciences English and sociology major Branka Damjanovic of Louisville will be the student speaker. A 3 p.m. doctoral hooding ceremony, hosted by the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies, will precede the main commencement ceremony. Some free parking is available on surface streets near the center and paid parking is available in the center’s garage and other nearby garages.

    President and Mrs. James R. Ramsey cordially invite you to a holiday open house with refreshments and choral music by students from the School of Music. Parking will be available behind the Speed School on Eastern Parkway.

    3.) UofL Community Music Program demonstrates Suzuki Steps music classes for babies, toddlers

    Jan. 3, demonstration music classes held at 9:30-10:30, noon-1 and 1:30-2:30; Suzuki Stars Music Academy, 3415 Bardstown Rd., and Rainbow Blossom, 3046 Bardstown Rd.

    Free

    These are demonstration music classes for babies’ ages 0 through 3 and their parents. Using traditional nursery rhymes, action songs, lullabies and instruments, these classes seek to build on the child’s natural delight in learning and lay the foundation for musical skills such as beat, rhythm, pitch and tone. Through parent/child interactions and class participation, students start to acquire attributes of trust, sharing, success and communication.

    Additional Information: These classes will be led by Blaise Poth and Jennifer Shackleton. Both of these teachers are on faculty with the Community Music Program at UofL and also musicians with the Louisville Orchestra. To rsvp, e mail: suzukistrings@louisville.edu or call 502-639-7272.     The Department of Microbiology and Immunology Seminar Series presents a PhD defense, “Characterization of the innate response to the RagB protein of Porphyromonas gingivalis,” by Justin Hutcherson, PhD candidate in the lab of David Scott, PhD.

    Nicole Luddington, MD, UofL assistant professor, department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, Veterans Affairs Medical Center will present “The FDA, Boxed Warnings, and Antidepressants.”
