    ·       VIDEO: UofL bioengineering professor Gina Bertocci talks about 3-D generated hands created for 6-year-old Lucas Abraham by UofL bioengineering students. Lucas was born without a right hand. Bertocci and the students demonstrated their work at a news conference Dec. 9. Watch here.

    ·       VIDEO: Mechanical engineering students at UofL’s J.B. Speed School of Engineering showed off their inventions during the annual Senior Design Project Demonstration Day. The students’ projects were designed to tackle real-world engineering problems. Watch here.

    Airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 6 p.m. on 93.9 FM The Ville; replayed on Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m.

    UofL’s Mark Hebert hosts two weekly 30-minute programs focusing on research and insights from expert UofL faculty, as well as stories about our successful students, and staff and campus events. This week’s schedule:

Nia is a sensory-based movement practice that draws from disciplines of the martial arts, dance arts and healing arts.     7.) Campus-wide IT issues 12/28-29 during Winter Break mandatory maintenance 

    Several key technology systems will not be accessible from 8 am Monday, 12/28 to about 8 am Tuesday, 12/29. Physical Plant will perform priority maintenance on electrical systems supplying the Miller Technology Center, making the data center unavailable. IT has taken precautions to ensure that all networks, VoIP phones and university email will remain functioning during this time. However, university computer systems maintained by IT will be unavailable (including Blackboard, ULink, and all enterprise-wide applications). IT’s HelpDesk is available during holiday break from 7 am to 5 pm, but closed Christmas Day.

    8.) UofL Today holiday publishing schedule

    The UofL Today email is published Monday through Friday. Due to the upcoming university holidays, UofL Today will not be sent out Dec. 23 to Jan. 1. The deadline for Jan. 4 announcements is 10 a.m., Dec. 22. Contact Janet Cappiello with questions.

     

    9.) Internal RFP for innovative proposals is announced

    The School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies (SIGS) and the Office of Research and Innovation announce an internal RFP for innovative proposals to drive UofL’s Academic and Research Excellence for the 21st Century. The grant is for interdisciplinary groups and will provide up to $250,000 for three years. Visit this website, which includes a downloadable budget template and instructions for submitting the proposal.

    10.) Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP)

    The SROP provides UofL undergraduate students who would like to know more about graduate-level education at the university with a 10-week research-intensive experience in a department that offers graduate degrees. Mentors will provide students with individualized research projects. All UofL departments with graduate programs will be supported. Students should be, preferably, in their sophomore or junior year of study. The deadline is March 1, 2016.     11.) Music City Bowl Cooperative Community Service Project
    The University of Louisville is proud to continue its tradition of bowl service projects by participating in a cooperative community service project this year in Nashville during the Music City Bowl. This is a great opportunity to give back to the city that will be hosting us. Both UofL and Texas A&M University will be working together on this annual bowl tradition on Wednesday, Dec. 30 from 8:30 am – 11:30 am CST. We are seeking students, alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and fans to serve with us as volunteers. Volunteers will be working with the Second Harvest Food Bank in Nashville to help with multiple food sorting projects to help address the risk of hunger for children, families, and seniors in the Middle Tennessee region.     12.) Junior Winter Tennis Camp

    Dec. 19-24, 1 – 4 pm Tennis Center

    $40/day

    Coach Rex Ecarma warmly invites juniors aged 8 to 18 (grades 2-12) to his Winter Tennis Camp. The camps are held daily at the UofL Bass-Rudd Tennis Center 1 pm to 4 pm (except 12/24 8 – 11 am). Please call 852-0217 for more information. Cost is $40 per day and camp days are December 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced players all welcome.

    13.) School of Medicine Basic, Bridge, & Collaborative Grant Programs

    The School of Medicine Research Committee administers the Basic, Bridge, and Collaborative Matching Grant programs to provide financial support to School of Medicine faculty. These awards have been increased up to $25K for Basic, $40K for Bridge, and $50K for Collaborative with $25K in matched funds. The next cycle’s submission deadline is January 4, 2016.

    14.) SOM Research Committee announces new internal funding opportunity

    The School of Medicine Research Committee announces a new funding opportunity: The Jewish Heritage Foundation for Excellence Research Enhancement Grants. The JHFE Research Enhancement Grant program offers funding to School of Medicine faculty principal investigators to gather new data to improve a previously submitted multi-year, nationally peer reviewed grant application that scored well but was not funded. Applications are accepted quarterly. The upcoming deadline is January 15, 2016.
